I recorded a race from my car with my camcorder yesterday. I use a bullet cam with the camcorder mounted in a padded box in the car.
I checked the tape the other day and it appeared to be blank. When I came to view my recording of yeaterday it seems the tape wasn't blank afterall and it has now recorded over some old stuff but both are visble in horizontal bars. So I have about a dozen bars down the screen with alternating new and old recordings on it.
When I tried recording thismorning it is fine with normal picture.
Any ideas what is going on.

Haven't seen the video, but is it possible that the vibration has interfered with the operation of the heads? Tape drives don't generally like vibration, and video cameras are no exception.

I had this on a Sony camcorder with a bullet - the camcorder was knackered, though it was an intermittant problem, that became more... 'mittant'. In my case I could play the tapes back on another recorder and they were fine, it was the playback that was knackered, not the recording.

Good luck.

BTW.. you still Easytracking Tim?

The camcorder isn't that old (18 months) but I guess they don't take kindly to racing. I may invest in a solid state affair that takes a CF card so no moving bits to break.
Steve I sometimes do an ET day but them and Brands (local track) don't seem to happen too often nowadays since JP took over.

I find that a bullet cam and soft mounted camcorder works very well. The CCD doesn't like vibration either so even if you get a solid state recorder you'll find the CCD probably doesn't last long if it is rigidly mounted. At least with a bullet cam the vulnerable bit is the cheap bit.

had the same problem with a normal camcorder intermitantly, relaced the dv tape with a new one never happened again, try a new tape,if it still does it could be vibration issue on mount or faulty heads on recorder.

Thats the tape - They only last so long. Try a new tape and I'd also get a cleaning tape as well smile

Is that "So long" as in time or "So Long" as in amount of recordings on the tape as although the tape is probably 2 years old, what you see is what has been recorded, used twice.

Yeah sorry I'd say a DV tape would last 10 possible 15 full hour recordings as long as the camcorder was also cleaned as well (DV cleaning tape)

Tim - I've just checked your link and that's exactly the problem I had. As I say, I could playback on other cameras and it looked fine, so you may find that the recording is fine, just the playback head on your cam is playing up. I'd def try a cleaning tape first.
