I currently have a 20D and 50mm F1.4, 24-70mm F2.8, 70-200mm F2.8 and 2x Convertor

I have been pondering a 5D for over a year, mainly trying to justify the expense. As you can probably guess I'm an avid believer in good lenses rather than v.expensive bodies with average lenses! I photograph all sorts of things, but all purely amateur stuff.

Now that the 40D is coming out I'm thinking this might be a resonable compromise over the 5D - obviously the 5D is full frame and with the 24-70 on it would be fantastic plus the ability to go down to ISO 50. I don't think the slower speed of 3fps would bother me even though I like taking pictures of motorsport and avaiation etc. However I can't see the price of the 5D ever coming down because of the very expensive sensor in it.

Anyone else having the same dilema?

PS - I certainly think the bulk of the 5D over the 40D / 20D would be a disadvantage for me.

cheers

Really - I didn't think they were available until October... - what had you had before - do let us know what you think of it?

I ordered it From Hong kong, where they are available.

I have been using a 400D whilst I waited for the 40D. I have spent thousands on Lenses though, so hopefully will have a body to make better use of them now.

If you shoot a lot of sport consider the 40D, if not then there's only one choice... smile

Hey smile

I guess it depends on how much of your shooting time is devoted to motorsports / aviation. If its a high percentage of the time then i guess the 40D would suit you better.
If you also spend time shooting landscapes, buildings, etc then i'd be very tempted to go for the 5D. Then, presuming your 20D is working ok, you have the best of both worlds. A wider lens on the 5D and a longer zoom (using the 1.6x crop) on the 20D. All with no lens swapping on dusty airfields smile

As far as the 5D price goes, there are rumours of a 5D replacement by november time. Guess the current 5D might take a bit of a price dip before then. Or maybe waiting till the replacement arrives and seeing if you can find a used model at a decent price ?

You mention the bulk of the 5D being an issue compared to the 20D. I've never held one but have seen plenty around, they look like that use almost the same body as the 20D. They are slightly heavier at 810g compared to the 20D's 685g. (The new 40D is 740g and roughly the same size)

Have to say im biased smile I'd love a 5D to go along with my 30D, but then i don't predominantly spend my time at airshows / motorsports, only on occasion.

Either way you'll have a great camera smile

Cheers.

I went for the 5D and 24-70mm 2.8. A little bulky, but some of that is down to the lens

I went from a 350D to a 5D and I love it - it's awesome. However, you specifically mention the ISO 50 ability - you might want to research this a bit - I've seen it suggested that the 50 and 3200 settings aren't truely what they say they are - they use the trick of under/over exposing by a stop, then brightening/darkening the image. People have measured the dynamic range of the ISO 50 mode as being noticeably less than ISO 100.

Nothing against the camera, though - the pictures are great at ISO 100 anyway.

No its not. If he was shooting other stuff prehaps yes but for sports/aviation I think the 40D has the edge.

Or get a used 1dMkII.

ok for sports yes fps but at the end of the day the 5d isnt a slouch really. Despite what Rockwell would have us believe there is a difference to be seen between cropped sensors and full frame sensors.

i've tried and now given up on 5d iso 50. To say it is a little shite would be understatement. However you can get pretty much noise free images at higher iso which is nice

There was a thread on the dpreview forums concerning the 30D and the way in which it created the intermediate iso steps (125, 160, etc.) compared to the 'true' iso steps (100, 200, etc.), and how that related to the noise levels / dynamic range.

I wonder if this is similar to the way the 5D's 50 iso is created ?

The thread is here :

You do see some people in magazines using 50iso for landscape shots though...but for the price of a ND filter you might as well use 100iso smile

Easy decision for me - 40D as I mostly shoot sport. Coming from a 300D I'm really looking forward to this. As a convert to Raw this year it's 4 shot buffer and slow write speed is killing me. Instant on would be nice too.

Release date in the UK is rumoured to be 15th Sept at a price of £769. Asian cameras only have an Asia warrenty and even with the best no Vat/import tax in the world it still works out as £715 from HongKong, so I'll wait the extra two weeks, pay the £50 extra for a European/UK warenty.

However - that's not to say I won't be looking at L glass on my US trip in Oct.

If it's an expensive lens (and I know you have expensive tastes) then the savings will probably pay for your flight to New York. Tell the missus you'll treat her to a weekend away smile

P.S. Hopefully I've picked up a really good deal on a lightly used 100-400
