Hi All,

I'm going to be starting a small seminar with 30-40 professionals attending.

Q: How can I negoitiate a sponsership deal ?

I have a small website and was thinking of going the affilate route but most of them offer a commision of 2% to 5 %, the latter once sales go over £3000.
Which is fine if you have a very busy site. But what if you have a more focused client/customer base i.e, professionals /semi-pros.

But some items where margins are greater should give affiliates more.

Should I talk to Canon / Nikon / Sigma (manufacturers) or talk to retailers direct ?

I believe I can really sell more Canon 40Ds and Nikon D300s
(once available).

R

I don't fully understand what you're doing but I would start with retailers like warehouseexpress and Calumet, they are more likely to get involved I reckon. I doubt the retailers would bother based on the number of people involved. If you approach Canon and half your people are Nikon users, the target audience is a lot smaller, can't imagine Canon would get very excited about that. Approach a retailer that could cater for all 35-40 people and that's a bigger target.

What are you hoping to get out of it? Do you need some costs to be covered therefore have a target to meet for financial support?

You say you can sell 40d's etc, what's the jist of your operation? Are you claiming to be a retailer yourself? Selling and providing guarantees on products sold, if so the retailers won't talk to you either?!

Don't understand who you are or what you're trying to achieve so can't help much, soz.

Thanks for your reply - apologies for not making it clearer.

I'm running a photography club/meet.

You are 100% spot on. I spoke to someone at Warehouse Express and they seemed interested. It's difficult explaining the concept without letting the cat out the bag. I've been working on it in my spare time for the last year.

It's a photographic get together with a different angle.
I'm confident it's going to really take off.

I'm not a retailer so they do not need to worry.

I need some form of sponsorship as the costs need to be covered and I want to be rewarded for my hard work !

I've sold countless Canon DSLRs + lenses to friends and friends-of-friends.
(I should be on commission) by just talking to people at parties/birthdays/on the tube.

Even in Whsmiths in the Photography magazine section!

I'm going to use the seminar as a platform to help sell a related products.
It will be upto the retailer/manufacturer as to what to bring and terms e.t.c.

Thanks again !

Are you charging people to come to this er, thing? That's an obvious avenue. If you're confident it'll work you could start charging after a while or increase the charge as the er, thing, develops a bit of momentum and properly gets off the ground.

Without knowing more I can't really suggest anything else, however one thing you could consider is approaching companies like 2020intro (i think that's what they're called) or other importer/distributors such as Daymen International. They work with Manfrotto, Lowepro and B+W. Quite how the involvement would work is up to you, but again, without knowing more I can't help! Things like competition prizes and giveaways in conjunction with a retailer/manufacturer/distributor will be good for the people attending but won't put cash in your pocket.

Have you considered approaching a magazine about this? The publicity would be a valuable and help move you up a level. Again, they won't pay you, but they will generate interest for you. I'd wager you need to get a bit more established before businesses will hand money over to you though.

Mind you - I'm guessing, because I don't know all the facts!

Firstly, nobody in their right mind will 'sponsor' your wages, no matter how much hard work you've put in.

Secondly, if you were lucky enough to find somebody barking enough to do so, how do you expect them to invest in an idea they know nothing about?

Do you mind me asking how old you are Ramesh, and your previous business/project experience?

Gentlemen,

I got the info I was after from this thread.

Before you all label me as another Apprentice/Den guy with an idea....

I've been on PH for over 5 years and (like many of us PH dinosaurs) I've helped more and expected nothing back. I believe in karma. I used to spend at least an hour on PH/other forums per day helping others with PC hardware/web site issues.

  • Best PH moment*
PH came to my aid when a chap in an electric car got stuck in the middle of a busy road.
I went into an internet cafe posted a message and a fellow PH'er called to help a minute later.
Result.

AndyM & Carter : I've read your posts/topics and replies for many years. If we'd met in the pub, I'd gladly tell you more.

I'm going to work on a presentation.

Regards,

Ramesh
