40D - my thoughts
Discussion
I've had the new toy for 3 days and have had a real good play with it this morning and been able to process RAW with CS3. so just a small list about what I like dislike
go for dislike first
1/ lens release button is not as well made as my 20D and not as quick to get lenses off.
2/ big screen gets covered in greasy, snot sweat, finger prints when shooting and taking lenses off.
3/ top buttons different from 20D so keep switching the wrong button.
4/ settings dial on top feels a bit cheap and not as nice to use as 20D.
5/ live view not really suited to hand holding due to camera shake. t his is where the competitors have it made with CCD shift. is good to use with IS however and I think canon made a booboo not implementing sensor based focusing.
6/prefer the old menus system
Things I like
1/ screen is major improvement over 20D, bigger and clearer
2/ focusing accuracy is vastly improved particularly with large aperture lenses. Using the 30mm f1.4 and 135 f2 wide open was a joy.
3/ focusing speed is significantly increased over 20D
4/ buffer and shooting speed much improved over 20D
5/ live view is a joy to use particularly when using the live hisotgram and simulated exposure. you can see what the cokin filters are actually doing and correct any exposure issues there and then. makes for large apture shooting easy to get right also.
6/ nose is generlly well controlled although I recomend the use of the noise reduction when using above 400 but not below as it slows down the buffer e.g 6 shots compared to 17RAW/75jpeg.
7/ onboard flash seems a lot better built compared to 20D and has a smooth raising action like the 10D.
8/ camera setting on the read LCD ala 400D makes for a quick easy look at what you are shooting at.
here is a link to full sized proper shots thatI have processed like I would normally do in CS3.
