Got a mate coming over from the US in a couple of days and what with the exchange rate, seems to make sense to ask her to purchase a digital camera for me. The ideal spec is;

Use SD (or micro)
5x optical zoom minimum.
Pref compact but might think about one of the hybrid thingys if they are not too huge and the zoom / lens quality and AF ability make it better for hooning shots.
Would prefer passive AF if poss.
Exposure control including if possible AP, full man and exposure comp.
Size does matter!
Image stabilisation.
Vid would be nice
lens quality is way more important than MP as I tend to think that is more critical for the image.

I have always used cannon EOS SLR's but got rid of them about 3 years ago as I was not using them much so I have a vague preferance for cannon but not essential.

Samsung stuff looks nice as well.

Sony I suspect is out as I really dont want to have to buy memory sticks and sod about with different memory types.

Budget of approx £200 or less as I figure the US versions will be roughly half the price so that will buy me a £400 camera which I would imagine will be more than good enough. Obviously there is no bottom limit so if I can get something that does what I want and spend less that would be acceptable to me!

I am pretty decent in terms of my technical knowledge of photography being as I was a semi pro during my uni days but that was early 90's so I am a bit out of date now.

Reccomendations please peeps.

Cheers
