I have a feeling that I was at home to Captain Cockup today...

I have a Nikon D80 and bought a 300mm Nikkor FAF ED F/4 (IF) on Fleabay. The lens is lovely and looks almost new - but doesn't seem to work on the D80. It seems to have fewer pins than my other lenses. I can't find it in the manual as being compatible or incompatible. HELPPPPPPP!

Thanks
Mike

Mike, as far as I know you should be fine with this combo. The only camera where you'd have a problem is the D40 due to the lack of screw drive motor in the body but i'm pretty sure the D80 is ok. Have you tried the two together yet?. make sure the aperture is locked off at 32 and initially set the focus distance ring at the sharp end so that the white dot lines up with the 10ft(3m) markings then try again.

Keep perservering, a great lens optically and light enough to be a practical carry round lens.

Aaaahhhh fantastic... so locking it at 32 it seems to be working.

I know I'm going to regret this but what is the ring for with the dot and the small chrome knob (that you said should be set to 10ft? And also the gnurled black knob on the lens a little closer to the camera? Stupid question probably but...

Well, as I don't have the operating instructions for this lens either, I'm going to take a guess that the chrome ring and distance scale at the end of the lens is the setting for minimum focus distance - so if set at 10ft - you will be able to focus as close as 10 feet and upwards. The other knurled knob you mention is the retaining collar for the tripod mount - undo it and you'll be able to spin the collar around. I presume you've discovered the internal 39mm filter holder (top centre of lens)- if not - push knob down and twist and you'll be able to withdraw the filter holder - a plain filter should be fitted as it's part of the optical make up of the lens.
