OK, I posted a while back when considering some bridging cameras and then had the good fortune to be leant a Sony A100 for a few weeks.

Having used a proper SLR stlye camera I've decided to take the plunge as they are leagues ahead. so....

It came time to choose one. Now, I like the Sony Alpha but currently have no real reason to choose the minolta fitment over a canon one say. So therefore have the pick of the range really.

I have looked at the A100 but also the Pentax K10D/Gx-10 clone. I do like the Pentax I must admit and I found the Canon 400D a bit small. I did like the Nikon D80 though.

What has recently crossed my mind is the idea of going for a used 30D as the prices seem to be dropping due to the 40D (I may even wait until everyone sells up post Christmas having just upgraded).

So, my real question then is, is the 30D better than the A100 or K10D?.

I've read reviews but they seem to switch about. Is going Canon of any benefit? (I like the idea of buying second hand lenses initially you see so long term compatibility is a bonus)

I want a camera that will last me a while and provide decent results whether I'm being lazy on auto-mode or doing it properly on manual mode ideally.

Help! just wondered what people who actually use these cameras thought.

£?

Consider a 40D if within your budget.

The 40D isn't unfortunately.

I guess I'm looking to spend around the 500 mark really. Which is why a used 30D appealed or a brand new K10D/GX-10/A100.

I've seen a few 30D's wihtin budget on fleabay and can't see a huge improvement (if any) between 8 and 10 megapixels in images I've looked at so just confused whether yesterdays higher end cameras are already surpassed by todays lower end cameras or whether there is more to it.

Image wise I just want to do fairly easy things, the odd family snap, landscape, macro, portrait (indoor with lighting) and the odd motorsport day out type thing but nothing too taxing. I like expermenting more than anything and am just learning.

I have a d80 and love it, mainly for the build quality and as it's so easy to get to everything when used in anger. THat said if you could get a 30D at those prices I go for one easily. Don't like the 350D / 400D - too small, cheap and 10000 shot rated shutter just isn't good enough for me (300D failed at 9000 shots...) Stick with Canon or Nikon as you're buying into a system, not just a camera. You'll struggle with the others. Ignore the A100 esp. the build quality's not great, and the image stabiliser is pointless - the images are very noisy above 400 ISO that means you can't push it to the higher speeds where the additional reach of the stabiliser would help. Also needs to be matched to the lens for best performance, where as being in the body is always a compromise.
My Vote:
D80 or 30D (depending on if you're a canon or nikon person)

I had the same decision at the start of the year and went with Sony. I found the Canon people said 'get Canon' and the Nikon people all said 'get Nikon', so I ignored the lot of them and got Minolta.. with a Sony badge.

I like it. It's clearly way way above my skill level (and will be for a long time to come!). The feature that I particuarly like on this one that's not on the others is the image stabiliser (body, not lens) as I use it regularly.
