Hi everyone,

I have just redone my website (www.gfwilliams.org.uk) and was interested on your opinion on 2 things, the actual website, and the pictures.

Thanks in advance,

George

1st impressions as I'm off in a sec.

The pictures are good. Keep them and keep taking more.

But the website isn't showing them off as well as it should.

I'm no website expert, but I wouldn't you need a low res and a high res link for each image. Most people have broadband these days and I think just the high res would be sufficient. You have the thumb nail, and then the bigger image, loose the low res link.

Change the font and colours. Make the font more professional and readable and the colours cleaner and crisper. Maybe do a few images across the page with the link below, like a caption if you will.

Hi George,
Some great photos there - you can't go wrong with a speedster cloud9

One thing really, REALLY stands out - the thumbnails take a good while to load. OK I'm only on a 1MB connection (I live in the sticks away from the exchange) but those on a dial up - (yes they do still exist!) will take ages to load your main index page - for me I can see each image downloading one by one very slowly. This would make the initial loading of your index page far more responsive whether you're on broadband or not (and certainly make it more responsive on dial up!)

You need a small low def image for the thumbnail only. If you can't create these yourself drop me a line and I 'll ping you some over for free - would be happy to help.

my 2p!

Thanks for the advice - I will have a go at changing it later today

I have MS frontpage, so theoretically should be able to create something good!

The reason your thumbnails take so long to load is that they aren't thumbnails, just a squashed version of the full size pic which is an insane 3000 odd pixels wide, and nearly 3MB in size.

Personally I would NEVER post a full res image publicly available on the net, 800px wide (or high) is about as big as I would go except under special circumstances.

With regard to the site - what you have done isn't bad, needs some work - what is the intended purpose of the site? Get commissions? Show off your photos? sell prints? Or just test your website skills? Depending on the answer to this the critique of what you have done is quite different!

after thinking of my previous comments (which were under the influence of some alcohol rolleyes) I decided to have a bash at putting a page together for you, feel free to use this if you like.

If you do use it, and have any questions, just let me know and I'll be happy to help!

I also zipped up the site, just extract the files and your sorted

The website is for showing off my pictures really, but if I get work out of it then all the better!

You don't hang around mate hehe happy to help!

I made a mistake on the previous index.htm. If you upload this page again, and move favicon.ico (which is currently in the css folder) to the top level (beside your index.htm) all will be well. The favicon allows you to have a small icon next to your site in your favourites/bookmarks.

Enjoy,

Neil.
