That time of year again.
Discussion
That time of year is upon us again with evenings filled with burgers, hot dogs, whizzes, bangs, "ooooh"s and "aaah"s.
Our local firework display was on last night and for the past 2 years I've wanted to get out and take some pictures of it but health was never permitting. I manage to get out last night though. I found it a bit harder than I thought it'd be, mainly trying to get a good balance between shutter speed and aperture.
Also, my camera (Nikon D70) is taking A LOT longer to process the shots than it used to. Any ideas to why this is?

I'd suggest that the Noise Reduction is working harder as there is more blacks in those images. (Does the display in the viewfinder / top of the camera say "Job nr" before the preview comes up?
Have a try at turning it off in the menu and see if that improves matters.
Great shots BTW

Really like your shots, this is definitely a lot harder than you would think. I had a try at this last night and the results were less than spectacular!
Thanks very much
And it is! I stuck it on shutter priority first but all my shots were going orange from the ambient light. So had to play with manual. I'll remember for next year though - and to get there early to set up

Haha, it's funny you should say that, Chris.Have a try at turning it off in the menu and see if that improves matters.

I was just about to post up saying "Anyone know why my camera flashes "Job nr" after I take a relatively long exposure shot? I've looked in the error messages section of my manual but there's nothing there" - now I know it's because it's not an error

How much of an affect does the Noise Reduction have on the shots? If it's noticeably better I might leave it on and work around it. If not, it's going off.
Thanks very much too!

If you have Photoshop or editing software like that, then you edit away in that post shots. Thanks very much too!

Using the on board camera function takes a while as you have noticed and you may miss that all important shot.
Turn it off

One function of NR is as follows: If your shot is (say) 8 seconds then, when the shutter has closed, it will take another 'dark' 8 second exposure. It then subtracts this exposure from the first. This removes some of the nastier forms of noise and non-linearity. Thermal noise is random and cannot be removed, but is not as obvious as 'hot' pixels etc which NR should take out.

Thanks guys, I'm suitably convinced to turn it off. Though, Zad, that is very interesting! Thanks for that
