Hi All,

If a group of us (say 10 persons) form a local photography club and would like to take photos in a public place, say the Common or the end of my road ...

Do we need public liability insurance ?
(The photos are just for personal use )

What if we want to help a local charity
(for free) by taking photos for their brochure /leaflets /catalogue ?

Thanks for any info !

You don't need it legally, but that's not to say it's not a good idea, depending on how much work you're planning on doing. If you have dedicated photographic kit insurance, most companies will add public liability cover for not much more.

The risk without the insurance is:
if somebody hurts themself by (for example) tripping over some of your gear, or you while kneeling down, then they can sue you directly, and if you are not covered (by insurance), it will be you that pays.
If you have public liability insurance, then you have the protection. You may even be able to set up a deal through your camera club if you work as a group on a regular basis, and that could be cheaper than covering yourself.
Enjoy
Mike
