I'm planning on getting the misses a digital SLR for xmas this year. Looking to spend around £300. Does anyone have any recommendations in this price range?

Cheers,

Dr G

Or a Nikon D40/D50.
I'd stick to Canon and Nikon, much more scope for future lenses and upgrades etc.

Canon EOS 10D's are coming down in price quite dramatically due to the introduction of the 40D!

Agreed on the 10D front. Still an awesome camera. The only issue is that they are quite big and heavy in comparison to some of the newer cameras. The flip-side to this is that they are strong.

Check out Currys offer on the Olympus E410 (available elsewhere) but the £50 cash back is an incentive.
I have just bought one and am very happy with it.

With the £50 cashback brings the 400D down to about £300, but that does exclude a lens.

I went second hand - you will get more bang for your buck as £300 is absolute entry level for a dSLR. With a second hand camera you can get something with a few more bells and whistles should you want to spread your wings! Don't go too old though or you will find that they're just not as good as new basic cameras. Unlike film technology, digital cameras are still in their infancy and are developing fast.

I went for a Nikon D70s. I much preferred the look/feel of Nikons (although I haven't had a close look at Canons), my brother & dad both use Nikons, and I have just been let down by a Canon compact rolleyes

I bought it on ebay, essentially brand new and boxed with the kit lens for about 300 quid. The equivalent camera now is the D80 which is 6-700 quid with a lens. Nikon's entry level camera is the D40 which, although apparently very good, is limited to AF-S lenses which are expensive. It also has no LCD status display which annoyed me.
