Whats the point of VR on a wide angle lens then? Surely even someone with Parkinsons could hold a camera still enough at 18-55mm!!! rolleyes

There's always a place for VR on decent optics as there's always a tiny amount of vibration on anything handheld.

..but I severely doubt these are decent optics. When will Nikon stop concentrating on putting VR on cheap slow entry level lenses and put it on the decent stuff that actually justifies it? IMO they're using it as a way to add a massive margin to cheap to manufacture consumer optics in plastic bodies. I mean how much will this thing cost? At least £100 premium over the std lens I bet, and they've even removed the ED elements to make it cheaper! ARGH!

How VR can be a priority over ED optics escapes me. Selling out the Nikon reputation to shift units.

Yet they still don't have a DX format standard lens with constant F2.8 and VR.

Humpf.

Well its there for 2 reasons, because canon has one, and because the kit lens is slow and poor.

IS compensates for a slow lens and helps with a poor one (so you can stop it down).

Interesting thoughts, but IMHO misguided. I have the 18/200 and it is not perfect but a damned good catch all lens. If I need good aperture and bokeh I have the 17/55 and 70/200 f2.8 lenses, but then the sherpa accompanies me to carry it all. I find the 4 stop advantage on the 18/200 damned useful and equivalent to using an f2.8 lens (OK - not the same bokeh) plus the advantage of the reach. I doubt now you will see a DX f2.8 and VR since professionals are going to be changing in droves to the D3, especially given the high ISO results that I've seen on the internet; indoor sports shots I can't even dream of with the D2X no matter what lens is attached. I do though have a superb Nikkor with constant f4 and VR - the 200/400. I am just waiting to get my D3 and try it out at Mulsanne at dawn and dusk next year. Camera already ordered from the USA at £1,300 cheaper than the price here in Europe. Daft I call it - Nikon UK and their dealers have lost a fortune from me and others over the last year or so.
