I have been reading the thread with interest for the last 12 motnhs or so, but i now have some cash together to buy a new lens or 2.

I have looked at a couple of lenses but i am not to sure if i should get a all purpose lense for ease or if i should have 2 or 3

All purpose one i was looking at was a Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro (Canon AF)

But i have been looking at a 50mm prime (Canon EF 50mm f1.8 MK2) for portraits but unsure if this is the right way to go

with a zoom lense for out and about (Canon EF 75-300mm f4/5.6 USM MK3)

My max budget for this is around £200-£250

Can't help with which lenses to buy cos in a similar dilema myself BUT can say don't buy from Jessops. They are well over priced.

Just an example and these are not necessarily the cheapest but 7dayshop quote

£165 instead of £180 for the Sigma
£69 instead of £90 for the 50mm Canon
£128 instead of £240 for the 75-300mm Canon

Defo pays to look around.

Canon 85mm f/1.8 is supposedly an excellent portrait lens and not too pricey, perhaps better focal length for portraits than 50mm but then I use a 500mm (1.4) a lot for portraits, however for just shooting one person I do feel I have to get a bit too close. If you've got a cropped sensor camera the 50mm is probably the best VFM.

Agree with bramley, I have both the Canon 50mm f1.8 and the 85mm f1.8 on a 40D (and previosuly a 350D). I would say on the crop sensor the 50mm is the better portrait lens unless you want just headshots, as the working distance for the 85mm is quite long.

Have a look here for pricing:-
