Just bought a D300 that I can return and wondering if I really shouldn't have got a 1d mk3 instead. I didn't go for the 5d as I don't like its ergonomics/interface and its getting old now. Its just it seems even nikon is going the FX route now and there is no denying the advantages of full frame.

I was planning to build up a decent selection of glass and some I want are DX. This seems like it may be a bad idea upon reflection.

So do I stretch to the 1dmk3 and hold back on getting more than 1 lens until I can afford more. I was about to buy the nikor 70-200 f2.8 (which at least won't crop on a D3 I believe?).

I don't have any lens beyond what I've just bought so really this is a brand choice question I guess. I prefer how nikons handle I think, I love that they offer an 18-200 for when I just want convenience, but spending loads on lenses that won't work on full frame is crazy.

Thoughts? Anyone know when the 5d mk2 is out?

Buyers remorse is a bastard isn't it!

Don't stress too much - Nikon releasing one FX camera is a long way away from Nikon going the FX route. The 1DMkIII you mention isn't even full frame anyway.

Crop factor can be an advantage in many cases - it gives you extra length - which (I'm told) can be a good thing.

As a Nikon owner with only one (relatively cheap) DX lens, I'm not really bothered by crop factor - I love my D200 and always have (notwithstanding the noise issues...) That said I do covet a 5D, and have since it came out. I couldn't care less about a 1D mkIII though, for the type of photo I take it offers no distinct advantage. If I was starting out now, knowing what I know - I'd buy a 5D with no hesitation whatsoever. Not being very helpful am I?

The 1DS mkIII is a motorsport/photojournalists dream - but that's not the be all and end all.

Get out there and take photos, the equipment is the means not the end.

smile

edit: 5dmkII - only someone at Canon can answer that, and they wont announce it on Pistonheads!

Haha you are right about buyers remorse and its not like I didn't do research before hand...

Thing is, I've paid about the same as a 5d for my d300. I didn't love the canons ergonomics when I had a play which is the main thing that put me off and as you say was initially impressed by the crop factor length advantages.

I was talking 1d mk3, not 1ds mk3!!! 20 megapixels is going too far!

If its any help, some canon users seem to be looking at the new D300 and D3 with green eyes recently smile

For the 5d mk2 - the forums are filled with rumours of spec / release-date but nothing is certain smile There were 40D rumours for months and months before release.
In recent days this got the camera forums buzzing. How much you can read into that is really anyones guess...

Cheers.

The 5DMk2 turned out to have been a mistake by the site owners. http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5...

"Spring 2008" seems a popular bet. In the past, Canon have launched new cameras at PMA:
PMA-05 (Eos-350D)
PMA-06 (Eos-30D)

This year PMA-08 is Jan 31st to Feb 2nd. Which to me is a bit early to be called Spring.

I have been told March by a retailer for the 5DMkII, though how accurate that will be, who knows? It's obviously on it's way as the cashback being offered on the 5D before Christmas is large (percentage terms) compared with other cash back deals.
