2nd Hand/bargaincameras - where from?
Discussion
I'm really enjoying having the use of a borrowed camera at the moment. Its an Olympus C765.
You can see some of my shots in my flickr, which is linked in my other thread -
http://pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I'd love to get something similar myself - but dont have a huge budget.
Whats the market like for 2nd hand stuff?
Can anyone give any pointers as to where I might find decent, used stuff? I'm not bothered about having the latest model of anything.
Are there any forums with Classified sections?
Any clearance shops you know of?
Of course, there is ebay, and I am monitoring it, but theres a lot of junk on there aswell.
I've also tried my local independent shop, but I dont think they can help really.
Any suggestions or advice?

ebay for me - but know what you want to buy before you bid. Personally I'd stick to Nikon or Canon as there's a much bigger market. Of course real men only buy Nikon...

Edit to add that you did well to get those images with a point and shoot. If motorsport is your thing then a DSLR is much more reliable because there's no shutter delay.

try http://www.mxv.co.uk/
i've found them to be cheaper than ebay, faster postage and very helpfull on the phone.
i bought a 5x4 camera off them, sold it just recently on ebay and found myself £50 or so up!
also try nicholas camera company, not as cheap tho.

Scho thats brill - I'm having a good trawl through their website
I want something more capable than your tpyical slip-it-in-your-pocket compact, but not sure I want the size and complexity of a D-slr.
My Dad has one of those Olympus 4/3rds size SLRs, does anyone else make anything similar?
Alternatively, something along the lines of the Olympus I've been using, or that new Canon G9. Bit bigger, nice big lens, lots of manual control.

The thing you need to remember Snotters is that the men that buy Nikons tend to wear girlies underwear

By a canon mate!
Prices of 300/350D & 10D are all coming down now and even with a kit lens produce a good photograph and are user friendly where I was find Nikons to be a right royal pain in the shitbox
Take a look on Ebay, always bargains to be had there, but use head over heart bidding techniques or you may get burnt!
As an example:
Before the release of the 40D, I paid £320 for a EOS 10D with battery grip, software, leads and whatnot, with 7500 actuations, but no lens
The price of the above camera has come down to a point where I have seen them going for little over £200 with no lens and 20Ds slotting nicely into the price range that I paid for the 10D (which, I might buy next year as a second camera
)I want to avoid an SLR. For the moment - its more than I need, and more than I want to spend - though admittedly there are some Canon bargains about.
If I buy a £100 camera now I wont be too fussed about buying again in 6 months time If I want more control, but If I buy a £300 now I'll be annoyed if in 6 months I'm not getting the use out of it.. you get me?
I think I'm going to go for one of the cheaper Fuji's, just reading through lots of complex reviews now.
Any other ideas about cheaper 'bridge' cameras? I'm going to go into town tomorrow aswell and browse the stores - its a good time to pick up some bargains.

Thing is mate, you seem like a fairly competent snapper so its best to spend the money now because you WILL progress onto a DSLR and the £100 you will save from not buying a bridge camera first will go towards funding another lens!If I buy a £100 camera now I wont be too fussed about buying again in 6 months time If I want more control, but If I buy a £300 now I'll be annoyed if in 6 months I'm not getting the use out of it.. you get me?

Think of it this way:
If you buy a Canon and need help, Im only a shout away old chap

It makes more financial sense and you'll pick it up quick enough

Can someone give some pointers here - looking at the difference between the S5700 at ~ £100, and the S6500 at ~ £150.
More expensive one has a manual zoom, image stabilization, and a wider angle lens.
Not having much experience with a wide variety of camers, im finding it hard to 'picture'.
Both are 10x optical zoom, so presumably both are quite a narrow angle when fully zoomed in, but its difficult to know how much of a difference there is between the two. Presumably the 28mm would be preferable for indoor shots, but how much of a difference is it?

This is the comparison im making - is the more expensive one worth the price hike? (bear in mind, it may ONLY be 50 quid or so, but thats a 50% price hike!)
