Does anyone have or have experience of using this particular lens? It's significantly more expensive than the f/1.4 and f/1.8 versions. Is it particularly sharper throughout the aperture range? Many thanks!

i have the 1.4 which is plenty sharp and up there with my other l series glass.

Already owning the 35L, 85L and 135L it seemed the 50L would complete the arsenal, and it was a lens I yearned for for a long time, but once it arrived it appears it may not be deserving of being in the same division as the above (excellent) lenses.

A friend of mine described his as a 'pig' which he returned to Canon as soon as it arrived.

If I were you I'd probably invest in the 50mm f1.4 instead. Spend the rest of the money on either the 35L or the 135L which are both top performers.

Cheers guys - will have a poke around on some photo forums too to see if anyone has posted some shots using that lens. I'm not entirely sure 4x the price of the f/1.4 is worth it, but there may be a killer shot out there that proves otherwise! wobble

Do a search over at the dpreview Canon SLR Lens forum. There have been quite a few posts about this lens, some with samples...

personally I don't see the point in spending the extra cash over teh f1.4 and the quality of the lens seems to be ropey lol.
