as i can now get a 400d for just over £300ish why should i spend the extra on a 40d? if i got the 40d it would mean keeping my film lenses but with the 400d i could get a new one.
pros and cons please, back at work tonight just incase you get bored with me not replying.

even without comparing features of the two cameras, one thing you need to do is go and handle both of them. When I was originally looking to go from film to DSLR, I was considering the Canon 350D but did not like how small it was and with reasonable size hands, I just found it awkward. I then ended up with the 20D which felt much more like my old Pentax Super-A film SLR. The Nikon grip just didn't work for me either.
So, go and handle them before making any sort of decision but obviously also ask yourself what sort of features and quality you need too.

If spot metering, live view and the various other features the 40D has over the 400D are not important to you then I'd always suggest going for the cheaper body and investing in more glass.

It really depends on what you are shooting.

I found the 400d too small and bought a 40D, but then most of my stuff is sports, so the 6.5 frames per sec is handy too.

If Canon keep to their schedule, then the 400D's successor is due out in Feb, as is the 5D's successor. This would explain why there are quite a few deals around with the 400D at the moment. Maybe a 30D would be more bangs per buck?

I'd buy the 40D over any of Canon's other 1.6x bodies purely for the improved AF.

40d is a serious step up on the 400d IMO.

Wouldnt be a tough decision for me, but then I'd take a cheap 5D over the 40d too..

I bought a 30D instead of a 400D so the 40D would be an easy choice for me smile

If you haven't been to look at the cameras in a shop then i would strongly advise doing so. That alone convinced me of the virtues of the 30D over the 400D. Much better construction, MUCH better interface, spot metering, etc..

For now i'd seriously look at a used 5D, but i think i'll wait till after the 5d mk2 is released to see what the prices do smile

Cheers.

I know its a bit of a kiddie camera(it will partner a 645 mamiya) but i think the 400d+new lens as opposed to 40d and old sigma which probably wont work now.

Thanks for the input i will go and have a play at the weekend.
