I'm thinking of dumping my Fuji Finepix 6800 Zoom. was quite funky a few years ago, but now I am taken by the Canon. Question is, is it appreciably better? I realise that it has 7 million megapixels as opposed to the Fujis 3 mill, but in real terms, whats the advantage of that?

Still quite like the fuji, but it looks a bit boxy and is quite heavy.

Not helping your quandry, but I just got the Canon Ixus 860IS as a pocket cam so I don't have to carry the DSLR around.
Amazing little camera. Ditch the viewfinder - pointless these days, get one with a great big LCD viewer (2.5 - 3 inches).

Also, get one that does not use AA batteries, they are too weak to last a decent amount of time with an LCD viewer. Get a lithiom type jobbie that you can recharge...much longer lifespan.

What's your budget?

Got an Olympus x 820 from Jessops - 50% off plus 10% so came to £117, plus £29 for case and spare batttery, plus £35 for Olympus xd multi layer 1 gb card. Total price £171.

Liked the slightly larger control pad thingy and it was slimmer than a Canon. Being a camera numpty, seemed like a better deal, but I still have the receipt so if I have been stitched, bought a lemon etc, let me know. (Gently !)

Oh bujjer! What about the camera though? Not even listed on the Olympus website, and from the reviews I can find for Olympus, seems they are not on a par with Canon. Quite the reverse of the info fom the Jessops sales bloke...

It's just pants buying stuff when your clueless, innit?

I recently bought an Ixus 75 and absolutely love it.
I was in a similar position to Luca, having a 1D MkIIn and a 20D and got fed up with lugging one around when all I wanted to do was get some snaps or take a camera to fun social events etc.

I short listed the Ricoh Caplio R6 and the Ixus. I went for the Ixus for a number of reasons:
1. More stylish - ok not the most important thing but it looks good and feels nice to hold and the 3 inch screen is lovely
2. More compact - it was one of my most important criteria, it had to be pocketable and it's not really that much bigger than a mobile phone
3. Better flash - important when taking it to parties - certainly better than the Ricoh which was really let down by a weak flash.
4. Better image quality - apparently. Not done back to back comparisons but plenty of others said the Canon is much better. Doesn't suffer noise issues as much as the Ricoh
5. Low shutter lag - I don't really notice the delay which is quite impressive givenI usually shooot with DSLRs
6. It's a Canon! - can't go wrong!

Bad points :
1. Zoom range isn't that great (35-105mm) compared to alot of others on the market such as the Ricoh or the Lumix (should that be Lumii?) range but I have yet to struggle taking the snaps I want with the limited range.
2. 7.1 mega pixel - personally I would have preferred 5mp as I'm sick of this pixel race the marketing bods have created, but as bad points go its pretty minor when compared to the market.
3. Position of the flash - I'm still covering it up accidentally with my finger sometimes but I guess most P&S cameras have flashes in this position so I would have experienced the same problem with other cameras.

Now saying all that - you're not gonna like this bit - if ultimate compactness isn't top of your list then one of the best P&S cameras is the Canon Powershot A570IS. I didn't go for it as it's a bit too bulky for what I wanted but it has a few more features, slightly longer zoom range and is ideal for someone who perhaps wants a bit more control and creativity.

A browse through the What Camera type mags in WHSmith should help you too.

cheers
