Hi chaps, I know there has been some interest in the new D300, so thought it might be fun to post some of the pics I've taken with it. Be gentle as I'm new to photography and rather went off at the deep end on the kit front. These shots are all hand held with no flash so give an idea of the cameras low light performance which people seem to think is an improvement on the previous generation Nikons. I'm very happy with the camera, but don't really have a frame of reference to compare it to.

Some postprocessing has been done in lightroom, but I need photoshop to do some more specific work. All were shot in jpeg fine except for the cat one which was RAW, but works much better in grayscale I feel.

(ISO 500 11mm f4.2 1/30)

(ISO 200 70mm f3.5 1/50)

(ISO 800 20mm f5.6 1/30)

(ISO 3200 70mm f2.8 1/30)
(Need to desaturate the yellow reflection near the base of the flag pole - need photoshop first...)

(ISO 700 70mm f2.8 1/6)

(ISO 630 170mm f2.8 1/30)

(ISO 1400 135mm f5.6 1/80)

That's a bit like a new driver saying 'I've done the Nurburgring in 9 minutes - is that any good?'

I can only add - resize to 750px before posting as some of the images are suffering from jaggy edges.

So the D300 is your first camera?

Yes, its my first proper camera (not really been interested in photography until very recently), although I made myself digest a couple of photography books before allowing myself to buy it. Then I went mad and bought a load of gear. I keep making tonnes of mistakes, technical and compositional so throw lots away, but the odd one comes out as I'd hoped.

Thanks for the tip on 750px, will have to look at how I get flickr to give me a link of that size. Any ideas?

p.s. thanks for the kind words!

Sure, yeah, not bad for a beginner winkbiggrinbiggrin

Seriously though, you have some great shots there smile

What sort of iso were using using in those shots ?
The new D300 / D3 certainly do look a whole bunch better at high iso's than the previous models, infact they look like very nice camera's full-stop biggrin

Have fun with your new kit smile

Cheers.

The medium sized versions from flickr are typically 500px wide (333px for portrait shots) and I find them perfect for posting on here. You can get the URL of any photo on flickr by clicking All sizes, choosing medium and cutting and pasting the link at the bottom of the page.

Thanks. May change the post later, but even I'm not sad enough to do that on new years eve wink

The high ISO stuff is impressively noise free - slightly expected having read several reviews, but impressive nonethless. I assume you were using a VR lense, as even down to 1/6 the shots seem crisp?

Pastrana, they are pretty much all I have on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/21969266@N03/ (apologies the link needs cutting + pasting as PHs twisted logic can't handle an ampersand and thinks its an email address). I'm not paid up so you can't see the 100% crop images. That suits me though as they make the errors so much more obvious! If you just click the pics above embedded in my post it gets rid of most of the jaggies although flickr introduced a bit of aliasing on the truck grill.

Steve, yes all taken with VR lenses except the wide angle shots. Because I don't have an off camera flash nor a tripod I've been experimenting with what I can get away with hand holding. To be honest the 1/6th shot isn't tack sharp at 100% crop, but I'm not too fussed as I don't want to get into obsessive pixel peeping. Its better than one might expect at 70mm and 1/6th that's for sure. I was sat down on the pavement with the camera resting on my leg rifle style though.

In fact with VR and the fast low light focussing of the camera I'm amazed at what I can get away with indoors with no flash. Where I keep being stuffed is by the things I'm photographing moving blurring the shot so they look a bit out of focus.

Next purchase has to be the Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens so I can shoot with a faster shutter.
