Not sure if its the right forum, but a good pic I thought anyway, from the interesting standpoint, not technical.

My garden chair blew over a couple days ago, and since then it has rained.

I nipped out the garden today, and noticed the water has colected in the ruts of the chair and froze, but there was an icicle as you can see in the pic, how on earth did it grow UP any ideas, its has got me stumped.

Created itself above out of sight,
and fell and froze there,

....or possibly fell from airliner/toilet

On reflection
and comparing it with other Martin@NASA type images,
I suspect you have contrived the image as some of the shadows blatantly

Is there an icicle equivalent of a stalagmite?

Just had another peek, if not as if there is anything above it for the water to have dripped down onto it. Gremlins me thinks.

Could it be a cob-web that it has formed around?

Seen something similar before although that's dramatic. Theory is that water being most dense at +4 deg C is at the bottom of the container, Ice forms over the top and gets thicker. now when the water at the bottom starts to freeze it has to expand (you all know about burst pipes etc), so a spurt of water below freezing temp is forced out, and immediately freezes. Result one upside down icicle.
