Has anyone taken their tripod on board? I'm traveling through Stansted who are particularly fussy when it comes to Hand luggage but as I'll only have a camera bag with me I'm loathe to paying the 18 quid for checking a bag in...

'Fraid not. Ryan air's standard rate now and as I use them every other week it soon adds up.

I heard this discussed on the radio recently and a bloke from Ryan Air said you can check stuff in on the internet before you get there, for free. You only have to pay if you physically use the desk.

Apparently, my tripod bag looks like a gun bag to the non-photo-aware masses. Just a thought depending on how you carry it into the airport.....

Doesn't give you that option on line (Have just checked)

0 Bags and Internet check in / Print your own Boarding pass - Free
0 Bags and Airport check in - + 4.00 GBP
1 Bag and Airport check in - + 14.00 GBP
1 Bag and Airport check in and fastrack - + 18.00 GBP

Maybe this is for another thread in the p&p. I could go on all day about how bad Stansted is as an airport and my gripes with various carriers.

I took my tripod (although only a smallish one) in my hand baggage at stansted in December went through ok. I think as long as all your hand luggage fits in one bag 40*50*20 (or something like that) they don't care what you carry. They seemed to be very picky on size when I went through, may have relaxed a bit now though. If it doesn't fit in that then I guess it'll go in the hold (and you pay for that)

Much rather have a more transparent ticket price than the pay the extras when you checkin.. absolute bollox IMO

My tripod in its case is as big as a gun bag too and mine was actually too big (long) for the regular check in, so I had to go into oversize luggage. I knew that this would be the case so wasn't annoyed, the staff were fine (easyjet) and I paid the £10 fee because it's more annoying to not have a tripod than pay £10 - if you know what I mean.
