Just heard on the grapevine that Canon have released a 200 f/2 IS L and an 800 f/5.6 IS L, which would be the world's longest lens with stabilisation.

Haven't found a definitive source yet, but still...

Note it's not a 70-200 f/2 L, it's a 200 f/2 L.

Isn't it just a fixed 200mm?

You're absolutely right, apologies. I've been talking about the various 70-200s with the person who sent me the info, so my brain went wonky biggrin

Edited.

Actually, isn't IS a wee bit...well pointless maybe...on an 800? The amount of visible shake handholding that is going to be quite marked and you have to turn IS off when using a tripod anyway.

Not on the newer versions you don't. It has a mode switch to turn off vertical IS for tripod and panning use.

Honestly it's really quite useful on the long lenses. The 800mm I suspect will be used by the wildlife chaps, esp the birders and at f5.6, any additinal stop or two shutter speed you can get would be briliant. With the new IS (Nikon anyway) you can leave it switched on when on a tripod and so it is handy.

Yeah, I've seen that on the 70-200 - totally forgot about it biggrin

Fair enough. I guess I'm jealous - my 400L doesn't have IS biggrin

VR has saved me a few times, well worth the small additional weight. However I have found it to be the most useful on the 70-200.

On the 800 f5.6 it's going to be a miniscule difference in the overall weight of the monster and your sherpa won't notice the difference so just go for it biggrin

Its cheaper to buy a D300 and 200f2 VR than a 200F2IS ...

Canon are taking the piss again with the prices.
