I've been using two different image hosting sites - photobucket if I want to link pictures in threads, and picasa if I want to create an album.

Picasa seems to work very nicely and I like the client that I can use for basic image manipulation.

However, try as I might I cannot get images from picasa albums to link correctly into threads.

Is there a trick to it? Or perhaps a better image hosting site with all the niceness of Picasa while still allowing linking?

Thanks!

I've used 3 hosting sites, and only 1 of which works for threads, Photobucket.
Picasa doesn't like certain forums, and Pbase is quite random (one day it works, the next it wont).

A lot of people use FlickR, so I'm guessing that's up there with the best (and the facility to produce albums visible to fellow users etc).

This is linked from a Picassa album, all I did was take the code supplied as "HTML to embed in website" and extract the portion for the image

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/ianhardy/NorthHumbersideForestRally/photo#4945709216535478290"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/ianhardy/RKKwVDX5ABI/AAAAAAAAAAM/h2IIB4WhFC4/s800/north_humberside_rally_2006_0017-01.jpg" /></a>

to this bit (I had to put a space in to for the forum to show the code)

I use picasa web albums and also photobucket for inline pics.

photobucket just makes it so easy, even can generate thumbnail links for you.

I just use Flickr for everything, i used to think photobucket was good, but flickr has a massive community behind it.

I'm another Flickr user. thumbup from me

The easy way to link to one of your pictures for posting here is:

Click on the picture you want.

Click the "all sizes" link above the pic

Choose the middle size (500 px wide), as this size suits PH well.

Then copy the "Grab the photo's URL" text

Return to PH and embed the URL you copied between [pic] tags.

Job done.

Example

I've used flickr and it is a real palaver to put pics up on forums from there. About to see how smugmug is on that front - fingers crossed!

I have to disagree that Flickr is a "palaver" compared to photobucket...

I have a photobucket a/c that I haven't used for ages, as I upload most of my pics to flickr, it's more of a palaver to have to upload them to another site and link from there.

Also IMHO Photobucket are unreliable, as I personally kept finding my pics vanishing as the site went down, henve my switch to flickr.

To each their own though wink

Slightly off topic as you need your own space to FTP to (and I've not tried linking to the pics) but has anyone tried Jalbum

It's free, has many skins for your album and it creates everything for you. It greatly reduces the image size without a reduction in quality. That's what I used to create an album to quickly post some pics as it's basically a 'drag and drop' operation to create.

Thanks,
Scott

all you guys complaining about flickr rolleyes, just click on the thumbnail of the picture you want to add to a forum, when the picture loads up right click on it and "copy image location" in firefox wink

Paste the link in your favourite forum and remove the ?v=012010212 part.

you will get this

if you are using Internet Explorer, then I'm not willing to help you biggrin

Flickr even has a PH group,

Easy to link pictures.

Create a PH post, enter in [pic] [/pic] then go to the image on flickr, right click it, 'Copy Image Location', copy this to between the [pic] [/pic] HTML.

Jobs a gooden. How much easier could it be?

Mentioned above also, a create community comes with it.

I was about to echo your sentiments, but it occurred to me that you, like me, have probably been using the internet since before places like Photobucket and so on gave you handy little buttons or whatever to link to pictures.

It's second nature to right click and "Copy Image Location" (hell, sometimes I even forget that's there and go into the properties and c&p from that) because we've been doing it since time imemorial.

With the massive uptake in digital photography over the last few years, it's not surprising to have an influx of people who aren't familiar with linking to pictures, creating hotlinks etc etc. Hence the very existence of BB codes on forums like these in fact (although I still find PH's [ url ] foo.com | bar [ /url ] construct utterly mystifying and counterintuitive).

I have to agree Graham that PH's formatting is a nightmare. I feel bad due the rules on flickr saying that the image should link to your flickr page, how the hell do you link an image on ph, I've tried everything.

Been using the world wide web for around 12 years now, god, I'm old..

I've been on the net since 93 so I am familiar with c&p - even back to using screen/lynx on vt220 terminals! wink

Trouble is, picasa is more fiddly and complicated than a simple "copy location". Photobucket couldn't be easier but doesn't have the nice album stuff. flickr does both but neither as well as the other two do individually IMHO. At least the other two do one thing really well wink

I've got accounts on all 3 now but will use picasa for the big albums and photobucket for the odd thing I want to link to on PH smile

Flickr I can have only 3 sets as a freebie! How crap is that.

Picasa I find easy to uploads straight from the app but a pain to link/embed.

Photobucket does albums/slideshows OK and is easy to get links from.

I could always use my own domain but I'm too lazy...

Sorry Tea, I didn't mean to be patronising. Was just saying that I've never bothered with those buttons or prefilled fields that some sites provide you with to assist with linking to an image, I just grab the href of the image itself and use that directly.
