Scanning slides

I have about 500 old slides I wish to scan or get scanned. Have been looking at eBay but confused as to which scanner to go for. Secondhand Minolta, Nikon costs about £300-£500 but something like Plustek which seems to do a similar job costs £160.00 new. Am I missing something? Are secondhand Minolta/Nikons better. I want the best quality so do not mind spending the extra.

Any ideas, advice or experience out there please.
