From what I can tell there are 3 types of remote release for a 350D, 1 wired and 2 IR devices. I want a device for doing on tripod shots. Any ideas/help great fully received.

I made a wired one was quite easy. IR ones only work from the front, not sure how they work with realy long exposures & stuff like firework shooting.

The wired one allows you to pre-focus and also lock the shutter open for bulb shots. I'd recommend this for your normal tripod type shots. The cord is not that long but you could in theory extend it simply.

The IR ones work as well but I don't believe that they have the bulb function, also the IR sensor is on the front so you have to pop your hand round to the front to use them. I'd say these were more useful for self portraits as they give you more range.

Yup, straight forward - cut it, join the three wires with any length of cable you have. I've had 50Mt's of cat 5 cable running on mine no problem.

Just use a minijack estension cable rather than cutting it, or build your own, minijack, 2 buttons, 1 switch a box and some cable...
