Right, 450D or 400D
Discussion
Ii have decided to upgrade. After getting fed up using my P880 i want a Canon EOS trouble is, i don't know which one and was hoping you lot could help me out (as you always do without fail!
) Should i wait for the 450D or just get a 400D because the difference isnt all that great, or is it? So many questions!
Is the difference worth the extra money?
Is £529.00 for a 450D with an EF-S 18-55 IS Lens good?
What are the short-falls of the 400D?
Whats so good about the 450D
etc
Helpppp!
Cheers

Don't know about the canons as I'm a Nikonist, but I'd say you're probably better going for a 400D and spending the xtra on the lens/lenses. For instance ca. £50-60 will get you a 50mm F1.8 prime that will open up all sorts of prospects. Twice that a basic macro lens. Or go body only on the 400D (£350) and spend the other £200 on a sigma 18-50mm F2.8. IMO of course.

you can also add a 30D to the list of possibilities, i have a budget of around 5 to 6 hundred with one small possibly 18-55 mm lens in the package.

Lenses are EVERYTHING to do with the quality. If the light hitting the sensor is all messed up, it doesn't matter how good the sensor is, the image is toast.
He's right. Here are some of my duff ones.
You can see the really back vignettes on slides (slices) 2 and 5.The changes on the 450D are not massive, has been upped to about 12 MP and has a slightly more frames per second.
I looked into to part exchanging my 400D, but would only get £200 for it, so felt it wasn't worth it.
The kit lens is poor, I'm no expert but I noticed a big difference when I upgraded the lens to a a Sigma 17-70mm (£220).
Personally, I would pick up a 400D (body only) and spend the rest on a good lens.

Theres a few nice bits on the 450d such as live view, 12mp and the extra frames per second but if i were you i'd listen to most peoples advice and get a 400d body only and a nice lens with the spare cash. Ive been told the 450d is like a 40d but in a more compact body, having used a freinds 40d i have to say im more than happy to stick with my 400d!
Oh and you wanna know what mines like? well just look on my website (www.dankemp.co.uk) I only got it 6-7 months ago and before that id taken nothing but the odd holiday snaps.

Well what do you want know?It was my first ever 'proper' camera, which I have had for nearly a year now, but that doesn't make me an expert with it!
I haven't found a problem with and have found no limitations, but then again I probably don't go near its limits! Certainly a great camera as an introduction to digital slr photography.
I like the feel of it, I guess you could describe it as a 'compact' dslr, as it is slightly smaller than other, more expensive bodys. It suits me in that respect.
I only use Av and Tv modes and they both seem easy to use and not too difficlt to get good results, I don't have the experience yet to try it out on full manual mode.
The kit lens does let it down, Canon have shot themselves in the foot there as it doesnt do the rest of the camera justice. Although it was adequate to get to grips with the rest of the camera with.
Ultimately, I have been able to get some images that I am happy with considering the little experience and knowledge I have.
Sorry I can't be more technical with my response!
Heres a few of my favourites from my first year with the 400D:

Cheers, and does that mean you would recommend getting a body only?

Yup, don't waste your time (or money) with the kit lens. With your budget you will have no problem getting a 400D body and a decent lens.

No idea about the 30D, only other DSLR I have had a little play with is the 20D. But have no idea about its features. Slightly more chunky was about my only observation.
However, I guess it makes sense to get the best body you can afford, so I'd consider all your options within your budget.
I have the 20D. 30D has a bigger screen on the back and 1 fps better I think shooting wise.
It's a good camera. I would recommend it.
Comparing my 20D to Wills' (big man above) 400D. Mine is heavier and slightly bigger. I jumped straight into the 20D so a smaller lighter camera feels a little odd to me but if you're going from a bridge camera/ compact, it could be the right move.
Not completely certain on the specs but the 400D has the sensor cleaning if that makes much difference to you.
When the 450D comes out, 400D prices will take a hit. So look at it as, 400D and extra cash in pocket, or 450D and not as much spare.
