Took this image at the Cemetery/Memorial just outside Verdun. It shows the scars that remain to this day as a reminder of the devestation the region was submitted to during the battle of Verdun between February and December 1916. The entire area around the memorial is like this and, whilst the trees have now grown back and the area is very peaceful, when such evidence remains it doesn't take much to remember what a hell on earth this place was during the peak period of fighting.
During the 10 month battle, 37 million artillery shells/mortar bombs were fired, both French and German. Put another way that's the equivalent of 85 HE rounds every minute of every day and night non stop over a 10 month period. Sobering stuff.
