I purchased a Nikon D40 last year and I have been very very happy with it. yes

I however recall a word of caution was thrown in at the time about what lenses
could be used with it due to it only taking ones with the integrated AF motors?

I have the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED and 55-200mm f/4-5.6 AFS G
lenses and both have been great, however I now find myself needing a longer
range lens for motorsport. smile

A list of lenses was kindly placed in a thread at the time, one of which was the
Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3 APO EX DG HSM Lens?

Does anyone use this with a D40 or could anyone recommend another lens
specifically for motor sport?

Thanks in advance. yes

Nikkor 70-300 AFS 4.5-5.6 (I think) G with VR

I've just got back from Mallory so will post a couple of samples when they've downloaded

Here are some pictures from a Trackday on Friday. http://www.octane.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=15269

I was happy enough with the lens, just need to get used to the new camera and lenses now.

Thanks for the feedback guys, but will a 70-300 be enough of a jump given I am
using the 200 right now?

Here are a few examples from this weekend with the 200 with a mild crop to some.

I'm looking back at mine from today, and the 300 was actually too much. The 200's have come out a bit better. The ones you've cropped there seem fine confused

Are you planning on being at circuits where you're a bit further away from the action?

Thanks Andy.

Potentially yes, I could be further away at some international circuits and I did
struggle at Silverstone from a few places.

Given some pros were using 500mm lenses, I thought perhaps I'd best start looking
into longer range options for further down my photography path. smile

The Sigma 50-500 is a big heavy lens and really needs some support. I very rarely hand hold it - preferring to use it with a monopod.

Hi John

Are you using it with a D40?
Either way, do you have any sample images at full range?
Thanks smile

Thanks for those Matt, nice shots. smile

I felt the 200 was struggling at times at Copse, but held it's own on many other occassions, so it's
difficult to know how large to go?
