Howdy,

I quite enjoy dabbling in macro (insects mainly), but was not 100% happy with the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro. Tried a few things with the 100mm, extension tubes, reversing ring, but just could not get the quality as planned.

After spending a while looking into macro lenses (and saving up money hehe), decided to go for the Canon MP-E65mm f2.8 Macro and Canon Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX. After seeing the results from this setup on flickr, just couldn't resist.

It's just a pity it's raining outside banghead, there's always tomorrow! Here's a quick shot I took of the setup.

Does anyone else have this lens/flash that could give some advice? I need a couple of diffusers for the flash, but any tips/tricks would be highly appreciated!

Cheers,

Neil.

Best of luck with the narrow depth of field at the levels of magnification that thing provides!

I think Hawkeye or V6gto/Jenks (Martin, what are using as login these days?) are the macro experts on here......

Worth having a search for some of the stuff they've put up.......

fingers crossed Goldeeno wink

Martin, you are not supposed to say things like that biggrin Maybe I should have asked, "How can improve these shots with my 100mm" before forking out $$$'s on this frown

Makes my macro lens look a bit on the cheap side.

actually - everything makes my macro lens look cheap...

I'm looking forward to seeing the results from this. Those flickr results look amazing but I can't help but notice only 2 or 3 people getting those sort of imagess. I hope you join them!

OK, I know nothing abut Canon gear. Apart from the strap-on lighting, why is the 65mm macro better than the 100mm macro?

I just did some test shots, as it's still raining outside frown

These were all with the Canon 40D:

The closest I could get with the 100mm f2.8

The closest I could get with the 100mm with 4 kenko tubes

The closest I could get with the MP-E65mm

I'm not very good at explaining things technically, but the shots above should show the difference wink

Edited to say, all the shots above were not cropped, just resized.

first shot with new lens, well, not quite first (the depth of field is pretty wild wobble)

clicky for larger version

This setup will take some practice me thinks!

How did you get it to say cheese?

Is that why the lens cost mega bucks? smile

Tecchy-wise it seems that the 65mm offers greater than 1:1 magnification then.

BTW had you thought of p/exing for a microscope ? silly

1:5 I think...

Niel, is that shot stacked? I'm guessing it is.

Yeah, 5x magnification max, and the shot was not stacked.

Cheers,

Neil.
