I've just ordered a fk off sized photo book of my landscapes from http://www.blurb.com - I'll let you know about quality... but from the reviews I've read it's the dogs.

The software to design your book is really easy to use and much more sophisticated than any I've used before. You can do almost anything design-wise.

You can also (as with Lulu.com) sell your books via their site.

Unfortunately it'll be a wait (U.S. based)... but the dollar/pound rate is really good so hopefully it'll be worth it.

If it's good, there are a bunch on here that should be selling coffee table books! (Jenx - butterflies, Nick - cars, etc etc)

Looks nice Steve.

I was looking about to get one done for the Iceland trip as I did with the bears last year (Photobox) but like their styling. Heads off to download the software to see what it's like.

Prices look excellent. I'm (hopefully, if I keep it up) doing a 365-days type thing of my daughter's first year and am planning to print it into a nice hardback book so I will give their builder tool a try.

Hmmmm that does look rather good. Having looked at some of the usual photobook options this one looks on the face of it much better...

I think a test is in order....yes

I've just created and ordered a smaller book as well - so will give you the prices and quality appraisal when they arrive (don't hold your breath). I'll also let you know if I get done for tax on the way in!

You shouldn't, books are 0% VAT.

I've had our last Italian holiday snaps done by Fotobook, 30 pages with a hard cover, which came out at £40 inc postage. Very impressed by the quality of the printing and a good solid feel to it.

The Blurb price isn't dissimilar so I'll try one of theirs to get a quality comparison. The Fotobook was delivered to me 5 days after ordering.

Looks good Mr Civic.

By the way: I'm actually looking to sell my books on-line (which I don't think Fotobook do?) - and the other reason Blurb might work for me is that believe it or not 70% of the hits to my website are from the USA, and I keep getting e mails from irate Yanks demanding 'merchandise'.

Steve, I found the same with regard to hits/visits on my website - the USA was by far the highest viewer.

Posting printed images to the States is expensive and takes time. Have you considered using US laboratories who could guarantee a good quality printing service and mail the pictures from there thereby offering fast turnaround times?

That way you keep the costs down and the Yanks get a quick service which is what they want. Find a lab over there you can trust and you could make it easier for yourself.

Just a thought!

Just a thought Steve - have you had a look at SmugMug to do an online gallery for the US? Very similar features to photobox pro gallery (set your prices etc) and can do password protected galleries.

If you are interested drop me a line as there is a referral code that gets me $10 off and you $5 offwink

Steve, I was going to do the same, but I heard somewhere that Blurb's T's & C's say something about owning the copyright to your images, or that once uploaded they can use them elsewhere.. Have you checked if this is true?

Also for photobooks, do upload the highest resolution you have, or do you resize down to whatever size is going to be printed at 300 dpi?

Blurb is U.S. based and they do a 5 day turnaround over there apparently.

The T & C's are the same as Photobox's... basically I own all the photos, but by uploading to their site I give them a royalty free licence to print them for me or any customer and they can use my images in any promotional material. I don't have a problem with that. (Though some would).

ETA - No resizing - but have to convert to jpg, so a compression of 1

Steve, I've been admiring your photo's for some time now . Does this mean I could purchase this "landscapes" book from yourself or Blurb? it would make a fantastic gift for my father who has spent many years in the highlands.

Cheers Rich.

Hi Rich

Well If I'm happy with the product, indeed it does. Once I've looked at it, I'll choose me' best 40 shots and put one on sale. I'll also put it on sale at cost price for PH people (and mates) like yourself... so you'll get it at the same price I do. Watch this thread!

It'll probably be a big dissapointment and never happen... but we live in hope. For big money it has to be top quality.
