Afternoon folks,

After a bit of advice as to what to buy lens wise for my newly purchased 400D.
Have the kit lens which is okish but not fantastic as you all know.

Am in the process of getting the Canon 50mm F1.8 but what zoom should i buy ?

Looking for a general purpose walkabout zoom that won't break the bank(less than 200GBP)

How about one of these ??:-

All help appreciated.

Canon EF/S 55-250mm with IS! I got mine two weeks ago and took it to Le Mans for it's inaugural outing - I'm really please with the results, will post up ASAP. And I got it for £178.

That Sigma lens should be waiting for me when I get in tonight so I'll let you know...

That's a good price BTW - paid £155 for mine from Warehouse Express...

Cheers

Yup, would reccomend that lens, I have one for my 400D, and for its money its very good.

If you after a smaller range zoom, them the Sigma 17-70mm lens is also quite good.

I would save up for an 'L' lens from Canon. I bought a cheapish sigma zoom lens and it's *ok* - but not great.

I recently bought a 17-40 canon 'L' lens - image quality is amazing - the zoom version [200mm] is about 450 quid.

17-40L opticaly isnt any better than the new canon kit lens.

18-50f2.8 sigma will slaughter it.

As a walkabout on a crop body. Canon dont make any 'L' monikered lenses that make good walkabouts on crop bodies, the 18-55f2.8IS is a cracker but not cheap.

By the time I got in last night it was too late to really have a play with the new Sigma, but first impressions are good - it seems well made, took a couple of shots indoors zooming in on small stuff and the results seemed pretty good. I'll try to get home a bit earlier today and take it outdoors.

Cheers

Cheers guys!

I would be interested in seeing the results from the Canon EF/S 55-250mm IS and the Sigma 70-300 when possible.

400 odd quid is a bit rich at the moment especially when my Chim could use a set of Gaz Golds biggrin

Keep the suggestions coming though !

the 17-55 is not a 'L' lens but costs as much as one - what is it that makes a lens a 'L' lens - is it purely marketing?

Many would argue that only the EF-S design of the 17-55 IS is stopping it being branded 'L'.
Certainly held in high regard smile

thanks, hadn't noticed that!

I do like this forum as you do get a straight and honest answer to questions whereas on other forums things can be a bit more "unpredictable"

I am a bit worried about the fact that having just upgraded from a 400D to a 40D, and then to L lenses that I might need to upgrade again to a full frame camera - do people on here have shares in Canon smile

There is a sizeable jump to the cheapest full-frame camera - 5D. Its about £1400 now, and thats a load cheaper than when it was released. So who knows how much its, apparent, imminent replacement will be...

For the lenses, just buy L serieswink then your can upgrade to a full-frame body whenever you want biggrin
(...oh, and the 17-55....and the 10-22 looks good as well hehe)

Cheers.

Problem is standard or wide lenses are wrong on one sized sensor if built for the other. You can get by but its not great.

24-70 is a cracking range on a FF, 17-55 is a cracking range on a crop.

I dont see the point (unless you know and can work round the limitations) of buying the wrong focal range lens incase you at some point change camera body. May as well sell the EF-S lenses at that point, EF-S isnt going anywhere, and rebuy other lenses.

I'd say the Sigma 70-300 like you are looking at is the best you will find for £200.
