I went out for attempt three with the rig tonight. More progress, although I'm off to buy some longer poles now, as I simply don't have enough length (just ask my wife, boom boom).

Anyway, the reason I started a new thread rather than post in "random photos" is that I'm after a bit of advice. In the unedited photo below, you can see lots and lots of what I can only describe as speckles, these look like dust on the lens but the lens is clean.

Does anyone know what causes this - dirty sensor? Or something else? I can get rid of it with some savage use of the burn tool, but I'd rather it wasn't there in the first place!

Is it not just lots of flare as the camera is moving round and the lights are hitting from all directions?

I thought it was flare at first, but it's just as bad in a static shot - is it light getting scattered around somehow?

Could just be loads of flare, but it kinda looks like water / grease on the front of the lens (or filter) to me.

Cheers.

I've just checked over the front and back element of the lens and I'm convinced it's not dirt on the lens itself.

Here's another example that's taken on an overcast day. Looking at this one however it does have more hallmarks of lens flare, but on an overcast day I wouldn't expect it to be so bad.

In the rear wheel arch you can clearly see white specks - I've had a dirty sensor before and it doesn't look like that. Perhaps the fact that I'm using a wide angle lens is contributing a lot to this problem... Have to say it's really starting to stress me out! frown

Any filters at all on the lens? What're the kit details?

Definately looks like flare to me. As per TPBG, I'd ask if you've got any filters on? If so try without....

i'm jumping on the lens flare band wagon!...

if you've got a lens hood use it.

might even be you're car/sky thats causing the flare on the overcast day, looks a bit hot.

Thanks chaps. I'm increasingly confused. In the night ones, D200 Sigma 10-20, no filters at all.

In the day shot, there same setup but with polariser and 3x ND filters stacked, so I guess issues with the day shot can easily be crap on the filters.

I was sure the lens was clean last night though - I've just given it another thorough clean front and back, and had a session with the rocket blower, I'll just have to see how the next attempt comes out!

I hope you don't mind Steve, but I spotted this in another forum that you posted:

Looking at the light trails top right, it looks very much like you've got the same issue, albeit far less severe than me! Did you have any filters on this one?

i used to get LOADS of flare off my old 12-24 sigma,

the shape of the front element doesn't seem to help.

Thanks scho - if it is flare then there might not be too much I can do about it. I can't remember if I had the hood on or not. I was leaning towards it being flare, but this is another from the same shoot, unedited this time so the rig is still in.

The problem isn't nearly so bad in this one - but it's still present. The shape of the blobs on the right hand side has me now thinking this is dust again... banghead

No probs. That was the first shot I ever did like that!wink Yeah same issue (I think its almost inevitable to a degree, as your going to overexpose the direct light source) but as you say less severe. I spent a little time cleaning it up too...... Also was using a CP

Just wanted to post to thank everyone for their input. I asked this same question on a couple of car forums (one of which has some of the best automotive photographers in the world on it) and I got by far the best help/feedback from PistonHeads.

I posted this photo in the random photos thread but thought I'd share here as well. Meticulously cleaned the filters/lens and had another go, 10 second exposure, I know it's not sharp at the back of the car due to rig movement, but the key thing is the speckles are gone! woohoo

Just had to say, cracking photos. I've seen a few rig shots before, but yours have a certain style to them- by far the best ive ever seen

Flare, would suggest most likely caused by light reflecting off the sensor onto the rear element of the lens and back onto the sensor. Not much you can do as long as you have modern lenses with digital coatings (specifically to reduce this sort of thing), but as the 10-20 is a crop lens I would assume it is a DG lens.

Just out of interest, what were the other forums you asked the question on ?

Thanks for that Fordo!

Tim - as well as here, I posted on DieselStation and one other that I can't for the life of me remember.

Dieselstation has some incredible photographs on it, but the feedback is often pretty savage!

Couldn't resist having another go on the way home...

Still a fair bit of wobble in the rig but tomorrow's delivery should sort that!

Thats a LONG way from the car, or at least it looks that way.... do you know roughly how far away? I've just ordered some more ally poles from a local fabricator to explore my theory that mounting the camera inside the rig will massively ease PP - the cups will be against the background rather than the car.

Looks like you're still getting a little up & down movement during the exposure... this takes a little away from the pure sense of forward motion. I really like the composition & some of the colour highlights but I'd like to see the light spread more down the car (the shadow on the rear 3/4 is a little annoying, and the shadows the tailgate look almost static). Definately getting there though, and the white ST is a great subjectwink
