While having a random conversation in work about photography, cameras, lenses etc I remembered reading the blog that someone linked to on here from a tog who I think worked for Reuters and had taken along what was more the size of a missile than a lens to try and shoot whichever stately person (think it may have been in France or Italy) was coming down the road in their security cavalcade, all to try and get one clean crisp shot of the guy from about 2 miles away, which in the end they didn't fully achieve...

Anyway, does anyone have the link handy or remember more info to make a search for it a little easier?

Danke!

There was actually a blog though with pics of the monster lens attached to the cam, their attempts to capture the "money shot" and even the huge flight case (which looked like it should be loaded onto the back of a tank instead of going into a cupboard).

Think the top photo of that canon lens would be better with the lens pointing the other way round..... redface)

That looks remarkably like 'Day of The Jackal'.

Wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to start with a reflecting telescope and just tweak the focus point?
