Camcorder Advice & is buying in the US a good idea?

As the title of the thread suggests I'm in the market for a camcorder but know absolutely nothing about them.

From the little reading that I've done it seams that format is a key decision to make and I like the idea of either the hard drive or SD card storage. Is there any reason why this might be a bad choice to make?

Does anyone have any recommendations of what one to go for?

Also, I'm going to the US next month and wondered if I could save some cash buying over there? Are there any format or compatibility issues with doing that?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Well, if you want to connect it to a TV, you need to check it can do PAL output.

Plus the charger will have a US plug on it.

Other than that (and warranty issues), fill yer boots!
