Hi - a few photos using my new Nikon D40 with the standard 18-55 lens.

Mr Moo -

Nikon D40 18-55
Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 10/150 second = 1/15 second = 0.06667 second
Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 35/10 = F3.5
Exposure Program = n/a (0)
ISO Speed Ratings = 800

Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 10/100 second = 1/10 second = 0.1 second
Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 42/10 = F4.2
Exposure Program = n/a (0)
iSO Speed Ratings = 800

Barney George -

Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 10/600 second = 1/60 second = 0.01667 second
Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 56/10 = F5.6
Exposure Program = normal program (2)
ISO Speed Ratings = 200

Thanks
Nik

Nice shots.

Just wondering about the exposure info

Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 10/150 second = 1/15 second = 0.06667 second

Surely 1/15th @ f3.5 would of been enough?

Don't worry, we know what '1/15th' sec is smile Dangerously low to avoid camera-shake but you got away with it. Very good results* although I find the blue ball distracting.

  • ETA: focus on eyes not nose!

Second one is mere inches away from greatness. As Simpo says, the focus should be on the eyes, colour, composition, tone are all great, but the focus point lets it down.

Yep, I like the composition and processing, which is the hard bit. Changing the focus is easy. OP is not yer average beginner. It also shows that talent will show with any camera.

Not sure if thats a compliment!! laugh

The only problem I am having with the D40 is it only has 3 focus points so it tends to focus on the closest point (the nose) - though I am sure I can get around that, just have to take a few more photos to get it right.

Thanks for your comments.

Stigmund, I don't know how you made those thumbnails but they take as long to load as the big images behind them!

Looks like the thumbnail option scales the image via the browser only - its still the original image, but a bit smaller. The only thing saved is screen space...

(If your using firefox : right-click -> 'View Image' on the thumbnails)

Cheers.

No 2 is ace, and dogs have very interesting noses so why be conventional smile

You say the camera has 3 af points, can you force it to only use one of them? (or use mf..?)

Excellent shots, see this is the sort of thing that will inspire me, now where is the dog...

Assuming it is like the D70, the choice of AF sensor depend partly on the mode you have chosen on the top dial.
In 'Auto' mode it will use 'closest subject priority' - i.e. it will focus on the sensor covering the closest subject. Look for 'AF Area Modes' in the manual...

If you are having issues with focus points, focus on the eyes with a half shutter press then recompose the image the way you want it, and then fully depress the shutter - presto!

Of course if it's anything like all other dogs, it will have moved a mile by then...

and make sure you're on One Shot focus as opposed to Servo focus (or whatever your model calls it)otherwise the focus will readjust when you recompose.

Yes, the old boy is alright he doesnt mind just sitting but the younger one, he wont sit still for more then about 2 seconds!

I think I did change the focus in the main menu and I have been using the 'P' setting on the top dial.

  1. 1 has camera shake (but you did ask) smile
I saw that you use P (Program) mode, in which case the camera is working out aperture and shutter speed for you. Now you need to take more control, so if light is low try (A)perture priority, crank it as wide as poss and that will give you the fastest shutter speed for any given ISO. Mail me if you get stuck.

erm be easier for now to go Tv and set to between 1/60 and 1/160 surely. That way if camera cant find wide enough aperture she'll know she needs to crank the iso up

even at 5.6 it could be too slow but if set to 1/60 and get a working av you are guaranteed no shake

you have a very understanding dog! I took amelly George out earlier with the intention of getting some nice snaps for this thread but he was having none of it.
