Any thoughts on a compare / contrast of the Nikon D60 vs. the Canon 450D / Xsi (camera + the 18-55 lens in the base kit)? The reviews on DPreview are pretty good for both. Seems like the 450D has more technology built-in, for only a slightly higher price. But, I have read of users having more issues with the 450D when it arrives (faulty cameras, focus issues, etc.) which necessitates a return - should this be a concern?

Edit - I plan to use this mostly for pictures of my children, on holiday, landscapes, etc. - rather than for more "professional" pursuits.

Thanks!

I have a 450d and I love it. However, it IS my first DSLR, and I'm 100% clueless, so that may not mean much biggrin

I chose it over a Nikon based on reviews, the fact that it was a newer model than any current Nikon, and, er, my wife has an Ixus compact. So not very scientific, I grant thee, but I'm very happy. Mine works fine and focuses fine, when I'm not being a complete eejit that is. Got it to crash once but other than that it's been no problems. Live View is a bit useless (in my opinion so far, anyway) so don't be taken in by that, otherwise it's great.

The 450D fits comfortably between the D60 and D80, but in reality you'll not regret either. Best bet is to try both out and see which feels more comfortable. Remember if it's faulty on arrival then you'll still get a replacement and will have just been unlucky.

Sorry at what point does the D80 out do the 450D?

450D creams the D60 on every aspect, but the D60 still takes a good picture and is quite a bit cheaper, would be enough for your needs most likely but if you can stretch to the 450d.
