EOS 40 D and online supplier
Discussion
Having been comparing the Canon D SLRs, I've decided on the 40D and have been looking around for deals online.
I found this Linky and wondered if anyone had ordered from there and if so, were they any good?
Or is there somewhere better/cheaper to order from?
I have found it cheaper in one place, in the Dixons tax free store where it is £731 for the body with 17-85mm lens and nothing else. Which obviously makes the above link look like remarkable value!
Any pointers for good places to buy? I have browsed a lot of places, but having never heard of them it's difficult to make a decision!
Thanks in advance!

was best price I could find. Took nearly 2 weeks to get here though.
also try Ian Kerr (search for KERSO on here and EBAY) he does good deals (I got my macro lens from him)

Unless you're desperate for the 17-85IS I'd get a body-only and sort my own lenses out - the 17-85 isn't bad but it's never had the best reviews and unless you really need the IS it's pricey for the performance you do get.
I like the idea of the 17-85 becuase it seems like a good compromise for a 'base' lens. Although I'm no photographer, so if there are suggestions throw them in!

My dad has the 17-85 and a 70-300, to me that seems just about enough to cover what I need as I can't see me really needing a shorter lens.
Although as I said, suggestions on lenses if there are better choices and any other good suppliers (and has anyone used the one I linked to?) are most welcome!
Thanks!
Sigma do a 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 which is (much) cheaper and sharper than the 17-85IS, and has a wider aperture across the whole range. Less CA as well ("purple fringing", which is the 17-85s main weak-spot). With a high-Mp camera like the 40D you're not going to notice the missing 15mm either.
I've got the 70-300IS and it's a nice affordable lens. Lacks a little bit of sharpness compared to high-end lenses, but very good to start with. Again though if you can live without the IS (useful but not essential for motorsport and low-light), both Sigma and Tamron are catching up fast...

I went for a body only as I would rather buy the lenses I wanted, plus I still had a few from my 35mm days!
You might save a couple of quid on a package, but better to spend the money on what you want rather than just go for the one lumped into the package.
Havoc has recommended you some lenses......

The price for the 40D looks good.
If it helps - I bought the 40d & the 17-85 mm as a kit, before the cash back offer ended in June (You didn;t want to know that though did you ?).
I don't really like the 17-85 lens now and wish I had bought the body alone, and spent the money on the Canon 50 mm f1.8 and 28 mm f2.8 (both of which are cheap and very good) which I have bought since.... and kept the change.
The distortion at the short lengths is quite marked. The IS is good though, I can do hand held down to about 1/50 secs, not bad (for me)
I rarely use the 17-85 mmm now. In fact I can't recall having taken a shot with it for several weeks now.

I don't have any complaints about the 17-85 (although haven't really compared it with much) but when I bought mine has part of a package with my 20D, there was a considerable saving on the cost of buying body and lens separately. In fact, the 17-85 could have been sold on ebay for more than I paid for it (i.e more than the extra I paid over the body only price). May be worth looking at and then if you don't like the 17-85, sell it and put the money towards one of the other options.

Yeah that's a good idea if the bundle price is a good buy (which it seems to be, with the prices I put in my original post).

Ian's words on another forum:
"Hi, I am on holiday from August 6th until 19th. Any urgent e-mails please put URGENT in message heading and I will try to answer from holiday. Any orders already made will be sent by my sister who is aware of all orders. Regards Ian."
;)
Yeah had that message as an out of office reply. Bugger! "Hi, I am on holiday from August 6th until 19th. Any urgent e-mails please put URGENT in message heading and I will try to answer from holiday. Any orders already made will be sent by my sister who is aware of all orders. Regards Ian."

The camera is a 21st present for me and annoyingly the 19th is my birthday!
May well buy it before he gets back to me!

Looking at the Digital Rev site they seem to be adding UK import duty to their prices.
I had read on this site others saying they had got away without paying import dutieds and VAT...
Anyone clarify the situation ?
Tekmo seem to be happy to leave off import duty and VAT.
Link Delight seem too offer non-OEM kit, eg battery grips. Probably chinese copies. They are cheap though....
Kerso is pretty competitive against these guys and seems more reliable since he is in the UK and gives a UK invoice.
Anyone know of any other overseas sellers ?

I bought a 40d and the 17-85is kit lens a couple of weeks ago from the canon outlet on ebay. Looked like the box had never been opened, everything in perfect nick. paid £645 plus £5.99 p&p.
They don't seem to have any up at the moment but give them a few days and I'm sure they will have.
