We've been thinking of going to iceland for a while now, think your shots have just made up my mind, looks like you had a fantastic trip, how long did you go for? Is there a ferry over there or did you get the landrovers shipped seperately? Great pics as well
I was gone for a month - two weeks of that was in Iceland. There is a ferry which runs from Scrabster (Thurso) to Iceland via the Faroes. On the way up it's a day and a half on the ferry - which is ok. On the way back you get put off in the Faroes for three nights whilst the ferry goes to Denmark and then comes back to pick us up - takes us to Bergen for a couple of hours and then goes to Scrabster. Next years trip will I'll be getting the ferry back from Iceland and then going to Denmark and driving back from there. If you don't you've got three nights in the Faroes (one nights enough) and then a further two nights on the ferry whilst it traverses the North Sea. The only good thing about the Faroes (after having seen Iceland) was the fuel price.. 90p / litre. If you're looking for tips / hints - just let me know..
Glad folks enjoyed them.
I did put together some videos (had to add a soundtrack - the noise of a oil burner engine does nothing for the pictures).
First pass at the footage
Additional Footage They're both about 15Mb in size and will run in Quicktime. The compression spoils the quality though.

I have a question.... what's the reason for the tents being pitched on top of the 4x4's?
Cheers,
Jon
Have you ever slept on Lava ? We had a couple of folks with us who were tenting on the ground - one had an inflatable double mattress, the other a camp bed. Both of them decided they were going to buy roof tents for their next trip. Lots of advantages - off the cold ground, Mattress built in, it's flat and you can leave all your duvets and pillows in the tent when you fold it in the morning to move on.Cheers,
Jon

Really nice pics. I did something similar in 2007 but mine aren't as good. I recognise a lot of the places, although we didn't go offroad as much as you. How did you know where to go? The ice melting on the black beach is almost identical to a picture I took.
We have some Icelandic friends and went to Landmannalaugar with two 4x4s, but I doubt we would have found it without them. Stunning place, the highlight of the holiday for me.

How did you know where to go?
It was relatively easy - look up all the places you fancied seeing - find them on a map and then plot routes and plan the itinerary that way.Being blunt - we had a paper map, GPS, and topographically maps of Iceland which were linked to GPS. In the end we had setup a rough itinerary of where roughly we were going and allowing a certain mileage allowance each day planned roughly where we wanted to go. Some days fell into place nicely, some were complete b
ds (12 miles in 4 hours) and some were extensive driving days (450 miles in a day the day after the day from hell).
We also checked up on the online Icelandic road status which advised which roads were closed, open etc - the F910 (we now know what the F stands for) was actually closed to all traffic three days before we landed in Iceland and we wanted to drive it the day after arrival.
Since the road classifications are for Normal Car, 4x4 & Special 4x4. We all fell into the latter category (apart from two of the vehicles) but we figured that if we came to really deep water - we'd tape up their air intakes and drag them across. We never really got deeper than half way up the doors but most of the crossings we did were in the morning when the rivers are not at full flow.
I'm wanting to go back next year and do the south east section of the Island (and visit more volcanoes) since a couple of us blasted through that section in an afternoon on the way to Jokulsarlon (the Ice Lagoon) - there are some lovely things to photograph there - I can see another week there for that trip.
Glad folk enjoyed them.
The Blurb book has been designed and is currently in shipping (so if it's bad quality I'll be blaming that GitCarter).
. I like the previews you can get online with Blurb meaning that others on the trip (who live at different ends of the country can view and decide if they fancy a copy.
