A lot of my night or dark shots have snowflake like things appearing in the pictures taken. I first thought the lens was dirty but its not as these appear in random places on the picture...any idea's as to what is going wrong?

The camera is a Sony T50

It's called noise, the camera will be upping its light sensitivity because of the lack of available light, this naturally reduces the quality of an image and will put lots of black and white marks everywhere.

My guess is you mean lens flare, but that's usually caused by the sun. Do your shots have any bright lights in them? Is there a relationship between the 'snowflakes' and any bright light sources? If yes, it's merely a function of the lens.

It sounds like one of what on "Most Haunted" they call Orbs. Basically the flash fires and illuminates particles of dust close to the lens.

Ok so noise was totally the wrong answer here. Looks like light reflecting off a disco ball or something.

As Zad says, it's dust close to the camera being lit up by the flash.

It's not noise, which makes the whole picture grainy; or dust on the sensor/lens, which would show itself as a dark blob.

Thanks guys...so is there no way to solve this problem? Funny as it never used to happen on my older Sony 2MP camera!

Is there anyway to avoid this happening as it happens in quite a lot of pics I take?

Is it a camera/design fault?

It looks to me like their is dust either floating around inside the lens, or infront of the CCD. I suspect it would need stripping down, cleaning and rebuilding frown

i've seen this a lot with an old kodak autofocus, it's dust being illuminated by the flast, because they are so close to the lense they are out of focus.
if you do the same at night in the rain it does the same with rain.

my canon 300D doesn't do it nor does my minolta Dimage Z1.

hoep this helps
