This is one I took yesterday:

It's not a very good piccie, but she is outside my living room window, I've been watching her all week catch flies and spin her web. I think they are amazing creatures, there is a certain morbid fascination to be had watching spiders catch and eat their prey...

Those are the kind of picture i was dying to take Gemm, brilliant. I was trying to capture the moment the male made contact with the female but due to me having to use a bloody lg viewty mobile phone i kept missing it. I can't actually wait for christmas this year so i can start building a kit up.
I'd also have preferred them to have been against a less busy background as they blend into the conifer very well.

Gemm, i've just been looking through your pictures and was wondering about the spider shots on a black background, are these shot set up or do you put a black card behind the subject? Or is it just by chance that you capture them with a dark back drop? Lovely set of pictures though, really like the spiderling shots, really made my back go funny.

No, I never use a black card. I just naturally under-exposed the background and light up the subject with a flash(es) to achieve that effect (then maybe a bit of tidying up in PP if anything shows). Thanks. bob1179 said:

The camera I used to take the piccies (I took quite a few as I was playing about with it) is actually a boggo 7.2 MP Sony 'point and click' camera I bought at Schipol last year. I had it on full auto mode with the macro switched on, I just wanted to see how well it would take close up images. I've got to admit I was really quite suprised.
I'm going to buy a proper DSLR at some point, then I can can really play and hopefully learn some proper photography!

4Hero the detail in those close ups is fantastic, what lens are you using?
Thanks Andy, it's all down to the lens! I use an MP-E65mm, which is pretty useless without a ring flash of sorts unfortunately, I use the MT-24ex for lighting. Here's a couple more, taken 20 minutes ago in my kitchen. Jumping spiders are cute little things
Clicky to biggify.

Excellent results from your camera phone by the way!
Cheers,
Neil.
