Help! I can't remove my filter!!!!
Discussion
Another option (bear with me here) is to use one of those rubber thingies older folk use for gripping the lids of glass fars that are stuck on a bit tight. Otherwise pretty much any ruberised surface will give you a bit more grip.
One technique from "back in the day" was take a flat rubber soled shoe. Put the lens face down, so the front ring of the filter is on the flat part of the rubber sole of the shoe and twist. That normally works as the ring grips on the rubber part of the sole.

ah get this quite a bit, try the oposite of tightening it in then unscrewing
alternately use more pressure! Careful not to pop the o-ring out though

I'm definitely unscrewing the right way! I even double checked by removing to filter on another lens and checking the thread on the new polarising filter.
It's still stuck though....I ripped my hands to bits as it has serrated edges which are pretty uncomfortable when applying pressure to the filter ring....

I've never tried but this but perhaps you could stand it on a piece of wood and push down on it and turn, maybe the serrated bit will bite into the wood. Also try and short sharp tap on the filter maybe.

Not a chance! This lens set me back a small fortune (17-40mm f/4L), and the filter wasn't exactly cheap at £50!!!
Perhaps you have another idea....

LOL didn't spot CVP's suggestion, that's probably a softer approach.
Have you tried putting the lens somewhere a little cooler - maybe the filter would contract ever so slightly if it cooled a little? (not suggesting a freezer btw!)
Have you another filter you could screw into the filter that's stuck? Not sure if that would help at all but frankly it sounds like you need to try anything you can!

Well, it's bloody freezing in the house now. It's only 8C outside and the heating is off in our house so i'm guessing about 17C. I'll try again when I'm home from work, but this problem must happen quite a bit.Have you tried putting the lens somewhere a little cooler - maybe the filter would contract ever so slightly if it cooled a little? Is there a tool to remove stubborn filters? I've not found one yet.....

yes your hand!!!ps 50 quid is a cheap filter, you can treat that as disposable
See this is another reason why not to use a UV filterI'm sorry, but £50 is not cheap and I can't afford to just buy another one if I break this. Plus the chances of glass shards falling onto my lens and damaging it are very likely.
Also, you must use a filter to totally weather seal the 17-40mm f/4L lens due to the nature of it's construction. Without it, water can easily penetrate the internals.

Put on a rubber glove and then try to turn it. Works for me.
Is that legal?....
Oh I see, we're still talking about removing a filter.
OK, well, the rubber band trick is always successful for me. Wrap a small/medium sized band round once, twice or three times getting a nice neat close fit and gently start to apply pressure to remove the filter. It's just like having a lever effect, because you get to spread the grip around evenly and your not distorting the filter or thread. Assuming all is well, graphite, even from a pencil, might be a useful addition to the threads......
Totally different if you've thumped the lens/filter and significantly distorted it of course.

I found what I need!!!!

I just need to find out where I can buy one...!!!!

hi Beanbag sorry about the comment re cheap filters, it was being a bit facetious
and my try turning it the other way was serious! What I found was it was a bit of grit/dirt that would help weld it on, by trying to add slight tightening pressure it helped to release it
You're forgiven! and my try turning it the other way was serious! What I found was it was a bit of grit/dirt that would help weld it on, by trying to add slight tightening pressure it helped to release it

Seriously though; I took no offence to it and I was just making a point that I had no money to spend. I currently "run" a fiancée which means high running costs and a hefty bill in a year or so for the big day.....

I was interested to see your comment on the weather sealing for the 17-40 as I'm not aware of that, got a link as I do use that lens a lot. I tend not to botehr with uv filters after having some horrible results with even expensive onesGassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
