I still dont understand this? The cheap as chips canon f1.8 is absolutely fine!

What is it that justifies the extra 6220 pounds of this lens? I would really like to know! I mean it sounds cool but still, would the extra bokeh, better low light capability be worth that money?

Cheers

Leighton

Without showing my ignorance too much....

What's an Aspherical Lens and why is it so good?

I'll try an keep this simple....

You'll be aware that light is made up of different wavelengths, so that when diffracted it forms a spectrum or rainbow. there are loads of other things which are affected in terms of keeping images perfect.

As a piece of glass like a lens would act like a prism and split the colours out, it will also distort in other ways, manufacturers make lenses which aren't simple curved faces, but are more complex - hence they're not symmetrical and not spherical surfaces.

Complex and costly to make, but gets better images.

but are they so significantly better to be worth all that money? True you save weight over a multi lens setup, but I would like to see some direct comparison photos before ruling it out as an expensive toy for showing off with.

plenty of lenses have aspherical elements, that is not what is special about this one. The special bit is that it is f/0.95

F/0.95 - for when Rizla paper depth of field is just too much.

If you're spending that kind of money on a lens you've probably already got £40k plus in gear and a 1dMK3 is a massive step down!

That's precisely the point though - if you are in the market for this lens you already have an MF back and a massive investement in that MF system. To anyone in this position a 1D of any kind doesn't do the job.

What you seem to be saying is that if you had £6k you wouldn't spend it on this lens, which is true of every person who doesn't already own an MF system.
