If there much difference between the mk.1 and mk.2 lenses? I notice the Mk.2 can be had for around £60 new, however the mk.1 still fetches £100 on Ebay.

I believe the Mk I was a metal body but the MkII a plastic (don't hold me to that though). However I bought a MkII and it is a superb buy. Considerign how much it costs it really is superb yes

most people on here have the mk2 version including me, I have read a few times though on several sites that the mk1 version has better glass as well as the metal body.

I used to love it on my film camera, but since switching to digital and the 50mm 'becoming' 80mm I'm finding it a little long. Annoyingly, everything near the range I'm after is serious £££.

MKI has a metal bayonet mount, MKII is all plastic.

MKI is possibly mroe robust, MKII is disposable, both have the same IQ and woefull AF.

Love mine (mkII)

Yup. I paid the bargain sum of just £40 including postage from HK for mine. Best buy so far for my 40D.

Was that an Ebay special - Digital Rev or similar?

Digital Rev, I think it was. Very happy I was!

The Mk I has a metal mount and the Mk II a plastic one. I have a Mk I that I got off ebay and am very very happy with it, although the focus can be slow at times. I've not used a Mk II but everyone who has one seems happy enough with it.

Have just purchased the 50mm 1.4 having read reviews (comes Wednesday/Thursday) - I can see the lens being a keeper, and probably my mainstay, so therefore worth the expense but have you considered this too? I was tempted with the 1.8, but read that it can struggle with AF, and build quality was very hit and miss.

Quality is always hit and miss with the f/1.8 but keeping in mind most people pay about £40, it's no concern at all.

I do however agree totally with you regarding the AF. This is down to the crappy focus motor and I've had some pretty lousy results with it at times due to the slow and inaccurate focus.

Good choice on the f/1.4....it's a cracking lens. I've also read that it can be a better choice than the f/1.2 as the AF is much faster and just as accurate if not better!!!

Would be worth looking at the sigma 50f1.4 , has HSM (USM) and a modern asphyerical lens design

Same glass on both, just different body. Better to buy a new Mk2 with guarantee and for less money.

This is why I haven't purchased one. I like indoor shots and the "50mm" is going to be very long.

Anyone got any suggestions for a wider lens for indoor shots and a cropped sensor (400D)?

Nothin as crazy-cheap as the 50mm f1.8...

The Sigma 30mm f1.4 (approx. £280) is a popular choice, few canon primes of the same range as well..

28mm f1.8 USM - approx. £300
28mm f2.8 - approx. £130
35mm f2 - approx. £175

then for the well-healed...

24mm f1.4 L II - approx. £1350
35mm f1.4 L - approx £915

[edit] One last thought for the pricey-end smile The well respected EF-S 17-55 f2.8 - approx. £620 [/edit]

Check the reviews first smile - http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/overview

Cheers.
