Hi folks,

I'm lookig to get my first SLR camera and this seems like a very good entry lvel one from the reviews/comparisons I've seen.

I'm just running by you folks for a sanity check - is there anything much better that I'm missing for about £350/£400 incl a lens?

I will sell you an EOS1000 for £20. I presume you're actually looking for a 1000D?

ETA - sorry, that sounds a bit cockesque in hindsight - what I meant was, your title and thread text refers to wanting an SLR (i.e. a film one) which the EOS1000 is. If you want a DSLR then it's the 1000D you are talking about. I think the consensus is that it's a great body and probably better than a "starter" DSLR.

If you're getting pedantic, surely 'SLR' can mean a film camera or a digital camera?

Anyway, re. the original question: I've never used one but from what I've read the 1000D is a very good camera. The main alternative would be a Nikon D60. If you're willing to take the risk of going second hand, you could get a more highly specified camera.

Much more camera than the 1000D IMHO.

The main differences between the two (450d 1st)

9pt AF / 7 point AF (1000D has the 350d's af module which is poorer in low light too)
12 vs 10mp - IMO no great shake
3.5fps(RAW) vs 1.5fps(Raw) or 3fps jpg) - BIG BIG issue if your going to want to shoot sport.

Dont think theres much else? IMO the 450D (or even 40D if you can get it cheap enough with cashback) is a better buy).

Thanks folks - yes, I did mean the D one!

Looking at the differences and prices, I'll go for the 1000D as Jessops are doing a deal for £320 with a lens, and bag. I think if I really take to the hobby, Digital cameras will be a good bit more advanced plus I'll be wanting to get a higher spec one in a few years anyway.

Thanks for the advice!

Canon are currently offering £30 cashback on the 1000D, although maybe Jessops have already factored that into their offer price.

It is pretty much a repackaged 400D. The Canon Ebay outlet would probably be a better place to find one:

I'm by no means an expert, and not being biased as I bought a 400D earlier in the year, but from what I have seen the 450 would be the better buy.

Yep, all D80s have a timer chip in them which goes 'ping' at 11.59pm on 31 December 2006 and makes them really crap wink

Same for all other digital cameras in fact - they all become crap 365 days after launch date...

The 450D is a much better camera than the 1000D and it's only a tiny bit more money at the moment. I'm not sure why Canon have decided to make their lower end cameras use SD cards instead of CF cards though, seems a strange change to make.confused

I can vouch for the quality of these. The "refurbished" 400D I got earlier this year was an unopened box and an untouched camera i.e. selling off old stock. 400D + kit lens + 4Gb card + f1.8 50mm + bag all for under £400.

Folks - I've got myself a 1000D. It takes some amazing photos on the auto setting compared to my 8B Sony compact, but having read half the manual, I've got a huge amount to learn about photography!

Thanks a lot for your advice.

get yourself into your local camera shop and have a play , i personally think the 1000D feels awful , the Nikon D60 is a better bet i think

go and try a few see which one you like the best
