I'm Currently Changing from SLR to DSLR and ive been looking at this camera, i consider myself still very much an amateur photographer but i would like something that i wont have to get rid of because i need more features, so the basic questions,

are these cameras good?
good value for money?
Who would recommend one?
any other recommendations?
anyone got any pictures taken with one to let me see what the pictures taken with them are like :P

I'm going to be boring and tell you that they'll look just like photos taken with any other DSLR at that level. The difference is the 'nut behind the viewfinder' smile

450d really lacks nothing for an advanced amateur.

If you want something more focused to sport then try the 40D , shouldnt be much more money

The 450D is £440 (excluding £50 discount), the 40D is £750 (excluding any discounts). http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/

I would certainly recommend one. My only regret is that, since I got one, I haven't had the time or ability to get out and take more photos with it. If you keep an eye on the Canon Ebay outlet, you might be able to pick up a new, fully warranted 400D for £280 or so.

Does the 400d have the live on screen preview?

Nope, Liveview is only available on the 450D & 1000D entry level dSLR's.
Can't say i've missed not having it on my 400D, although i can see it being usefull for shooting very low / high and anywhere you can't get your peeper to the view finder.

Hmm thats why i ask as i do like low down shots, although it's not really a deal breaker for me.

If it helps - I bought the 40D with the 17-85 kit lens.
I hardly ever use that lens now, it's pretty unexciting and you get bag loads of distortion at the shortest lengths.

So -
"The 450D is £440 (excluding £50 discount), the 40D is £750 (excluding any discounts). http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/"
if you buy a 50 mm f1.8 for about £70 you can get a 40D body plus a very good lens for about £450-500

That's what I'd do....
