I saw an advert tonight for a Fisher Price camera designed for kids that is waterproof and shock proof and it got me thinkning. I'm planning to do a lot of overland bike touring next year and I reckon a new camera is in order to record these trips. So this advert got me thinking whether there would be an adult equivalent, like a camera equivalent of the JCB mobile phones that would withstand getting knocked around inside pannieres, getting dropped, covered in mud, rain, dust and all the other abuses that a camera may fac in the hands of a clumsy camper.

I'm a pathetic photographer, so am not looking for anything beyond a decent point and click jobbie. I've tried Googling, but so far have only come up with the Olympus MJU790. The price is right and the features seem perfectly adequate, but I'm not sure how 'tough' it would be. I guess I'm looking for the G-Shock of cameras.

Anyone got any pointers?

You can get 'camera armour' - basically a rubber coat that you fit on. They do it for DSLRs, not sure about compacts though. ATEOTD it's a camera, not a football smile

There was an advert for a compact camera within the last year that was taking a pile of abuse at the hands of some kid who threw it, bounced it, dog chewed it, boy washed it under a tap and then the end you see one of the parents pick it up and take a pic - no idea who did it, but the advert itself was pretty cool smile

Olympus 1030SW, just bought one for us as a basically indestructible compact . . . takes decent enough pictures, macro works well, nicely done flash, simple user interface . . . all in a waterproof, drop proof, case . . . and a decent 28mm wide angle on the wide end of the zoom too.

You could always get an old, secondhand professional camera body. Need only be a few hundred quid.

Built to last through wars - I'm pretty sure mine would last longer in a war than I would....

It looks like Olympus it is. I like the idea of an old pro camera, but cheer and cheerful is all I'm after at the minute.

I bought an Olympus Mu 1030 so the kids could take it in and out the sea etc. It survived the Tomatina

but sadly stopped working after just a month.I think the waterproof sel went and it let in seawater

Olympus have replaced it but I am very careful with it now
