I'm looking to buy a digital camera as a gift, say around £100 - but my parents are off to New York next week so could get one out there for say $160. Is the US much cheaper, what about warranties?

Any recommendations where to get one, or what one to get? smile

Check for prices - but I don't think there'll be any great benefit given the current exchange rate - at the following major US dealers:

Unless things have changed in the last couple of years, the warranties on Canon L lenses are international everywhere. I know that certainly used to be the case as my 35-350L came from B&H in New York and went back for a new diaphragm to Canon in Borehamwood under warranty and with no charge.

As the current exchange rate is about $1.6 - £1 it means $160 = £100, and that's before customs pull your pants down for tax!

That's what I mean - is it worth buying one out there or is it not cheaper anymore?

Any recommendations?

With the exchange rate as it is I honestly think you'll be better off buying from any well know retailer in the UK.

If you do buy in NY, do use Adorama or B&H. Generally the rest of the elctronic / camera shops you see here are total and utter sharks.

Wasn't worthwhile on most consumer P&S stuff this time last year when it was roughly $2 to £1. There were some decent deals on SLR kit at B&H Photo Video though.

Even less likely to be worthwhile now. Don't forget NYC sales tax is around 6% on top too.

Sorry to say it has changed frown
I was going to buy the 17-40L until Canon told me about the warranty !!

Ok, so forget about New York - for that £100 budget what would people recommend? I'm willing to spend a bit more if necessary.

can recomend b h photography. Pre ordered on line and stuff was on the counter ready, no messing about. Got kited out about a year ago and saved a fortune. Not to fussed myself about warranty, has expired now anyway.
