Whats the Nikkor equivalent of a Canon L lens ?

Is it the ED glass or I have I wildly missed the point ? again !

Sorry if its a really dumb question. I want to upgrade my 70-300 Sigma and I think the Nikkor ED is the way forward, so Im just double checking.

Unfortunately I don't think Nikon make identifying their top lenses as easy as Canon. I've certainly not noticed any definitive "moniker" as such anyway. I'm not sure if there is a direct "Nikon L" equivalent of your Sigma either. The nearest would probably be some sort of 70-200.

Saw your ad a while ago sir, really need to sell my Sigma first.

Is this the right route to take ? Cant stretch to a faster 200, and not convinced that would have enough reach anyway. My Sigma is an APO version BTW.

No worries, and I'll consider an offer when you're ready.

As for inherent quality, you can tell how far up the tree a lens is by the price. Hence a Nikon 70-200 G is about £99, while the 70-200 f2.8 is £1,000+. Similarly the 18-70mm is £150, but the 24-70mm f2.8 is £1,000+. A pattern is emerging.. hehe

what does "L" designate on Canon lenses?

Last time I had a Canon lens it had "FD" in it somewhere!!!

(ED: is the designation Nikkors have for "Extra-low Dispersion glass elements")

Generally the ED ones are higher quality. ED in Nikon speak stands for Extra-low Dispersion, meaning better glass so lower chromatic aberation but there is not a dedicated line like Canon's L series and the ED elements are making their way into lots of the lenses.

L stands for 'Luxury'

Usualy means one or more exotic element, ring USM and weathersealing (though not always), and solid build quality.

Then I don't think there's a direct equivalent.

For the zoom lenses, the constant aperture ones have traditionally fallen into the "better quality build" bracket, meaning they get "pro" status; it's difficult to know where the primes (tend to be much older designs) and special purpose lenses would fall, apart from the larger aperture telephotos.

Given that the "L" is "Luxury" I suppose.... scratchchin

Then perm any of:

70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR
200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S VR
300mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR
200-400mm f/4 ED-IF AF-S VR

If the Sigma is a Macro - the 105mm f/2.8G AF-S VR or the 200mm f/4 ED-IF AF

...would be the nearest equivalents to the top-of-the-range Canons.

This page www.parkcameras.com/Article/95/Nikon-Professional-...

- lists the lenses that qualify for the Nikon Professional Services scheme. That probably sorts the man lenses from the boy lenses, as it were.
