Played about with a pinhole lens (made from a body cap) on an SLR camera. Rubbish photos obviously but there's something satisfying about getting an image from a disc of plastic with a hole in it. Anyone tried similar?

Yup - tried it again a few weeks ago:

Been debating whether I need a bigger or smaller pinhole. Also, need to get out and try a bit more, I've seen some pages on the interweb where people have managed by some clever sharpening techniques to get remarkably good stuff - there were soem links on the Random Photos thread a few pages back....

A little bit O/T but one of my flickr contacts turned her front room into a pinhole-esque device, which may have been done oodles of times before:

Covered all windows with black bags
Punched a hole in a bag opposite where you want the image
Shot with long exposure from within the room

I used a pinhole camera in reverse, as an enlarger, when I was a kid. I then joined a camera club and displayed my creation for all to see and one chap took pity on me and gave me a Durst Reporter, a really nice bit of gear. I kept it for years but when the third kid came along I converted the loft and lost my darkroom so gave it to a local school in Swanley. I chatted to the teacher who ran the after-school classes about how I came by it and he also started with a pinhole enlarger.

That's called a camera obscura IIRC.

I made pinhole cameras at college and uni. They are great fun and yield some very interesting results.

I've looked into buying one from this company -

PS - it's really handy for showing up all the detritus on your sensor, isn't it!?

Yep, although with this sort of photography I think it adds a bit of character.

I think I might give this a go! Looks very very interesting. Especially if I did it in Sepia or B&W.

I've got a couple of spare camera caps lying about so perhaps this weekend I'll make it a bit of a project... smile
