I'm sure this will be consigned to the Thread bin very quickly, but I felt I had to share this:

My OH called me yesterday fairly distraught as she'd dropped my D40 - "It just fell out of the case and landed lens down" - and "the lens had smashed and there was glass in it and everything". I was pretty hacked off as I've not had it that long, but I wasn't angry - these things happen and it's insured after all.

Admittedly it's only a D40, but it's my P&J smile

Anyway, I arrived home (several hours later), bid a brief hello to my OH and daughter and sped to the camera, where, as I'd hoped/assumed/prayed it wasn't the lens (insert little hallelujah here) - it was the UV filter smile

Camera seems fine (not taken many shots with it yet) and I'm just down a UV filter biggrin

Sorry, but had to share that (pointless) little story, but I'm sure I'm not the only one with similar happy stories?

(Insert story here smile)

When I bought the camera, I got it from Currys and they do a £2.99 a month all covering insurance which also covers accidental damage.

If I didn't have that, it'd be house insurance...

Leighton,

any decent contents insurance will cover you. My gear is insured 'all risks' inside and outside the home including for theft and accidental damage. Shouldn't need to take out additional cover.

Most of my stuff has been dropped, kicked, bashed.

Worst ones (these are all Canon with red bands on the lenses):
My 16-35 fell off one of my bodies because I hadn't twisted enough to lock. I was running along a road to a race track, looking for one of my teammates on a scooter trying to find me, as I was late for the start of the day, and my paddock pass and car pass was with someone else (handy..). Lens managed to work lose, few off, bounced on the amco on the side of the road, fell on the road with a thud, and almost got run over. Apart from scratched hood and a big dent in the barrel, works fine smile
It also fell out of my overloaded bag a month ago with attached to a body onto the footpath. Smashed the lens cap, body and lens fine.
The end of the barrel of my 24-70 is no longer round, can't get a lens cap on properly. Fell onto concrete while attached to a body. Works fine.
My 70-200 has been bashed many times climbing scaffolding poll viewing platforms that it looks very 2nd hand, along with my telephoto's, and they all work fine.

So, one reason to pay good money for your lenses, is they are built like bricks, and can take abuse smile
